For years now I have had a problem in photoshop where frequently the cursor for various tools such as the sharpen or dodge tool would appear as a cross hair instead of the circle (which allows you to see the size of the circle). I could see no setting that was preventing this display.

Anyway just discovered it was really simple - if you have Caps Lock on the cursor appears as a cross hair.

So just in case anyone else has ever been perplexed by this now you know.

Thanks, Paul. I know there have been times that cursor issues have made me crazy. I will check Caps Lock next time.

AND when this happens, you can't enlarge or reduce the size of the brush. I always double check for caps lock when I'm having problems adjusting the brush. Happens in Elements, too - not surprisingly since it's a PS product.

Thanks Paul, because sometimes it drives me crazy, then it seems to fix itself,
now I know why.

You actually are still resizing the brush, you just don't see the changes because you can't see the brush.

It hasn't happened to me recently but I remember how it used to bug me in the past. I think I once even reset PS (or possibly Elements) to the default settings hoping that would fix the problem. Of course all that did was make life even more complicated for me as I had to customize everything all over again. I can't believe that something so small could cause so much trouble.
