It looks fabulous! If this is what a smaller pool of voters can do then I'm all for it.

Way too much "artsy" for my taste. But, they're very pretty once in a while. :D

I get the feeling it won't look any worse tomorrow! =)

This will probably get me in trouble, but I am not a fan of allowing entries that are nowhere near photo realistic, especially in what I assume is a photography challenge site not a PhotoShop chopping contest site . If textures are allowed then it would be a good idea to make it a requirement that the person submitting it has actually taken the texture photograph and any other objects within the work.

I tried to get a film-camera-only photography challenge site going once, but people refused to send in their negatives and it shut down unfortunately :-/

Regarding the "allowing non-photo-realistic entries": more and more, we are letting the voters decide. Remember, whenever an official "rule" is made, someone needs to enforce it.
I do think that people score images very much depending on what the challenge is. I think the Art of 2015 likely had voters allowing a bit more processing than normal.

The majority might agree with you regarding the textures. I haven't had much luck using them -in my case, it's usually to cover up a mediocre photo ;)

I agree except I would say not enough "artsy"

Style, because that's really what you're talking about, is a generic vehicle that allows people to express themselves. I'm a grunge junkie. It is my style. It is not where I thought it would go, but I get so much more satisfaction from this kind of photography than I ever did before. My style... it's not about you and it's not for you. It's about me, my mode of expressing myself and my take on art.

I'm genuinely delighted for you to have your opinions like I have mine... But I'm more delighted that I don't care what yours are :-)

You can make a photograph grungy without making it a complete makeover with photoshop. Maybe each contest should have a more detailed explanation as to what the actual contest rules are for each one. I read the original owners why the site was made in the first place, and it was not mentioned it was designed to show off your Photoshop skills but your photography skills and to learn and help others master the skills needed to become a great photographer. I personally take into consideration if the photo is realistic or not when I vote, there is post processing and there is a limit when it looks cartoonish or like an illustration or painting, unless that is spelled out in the contest rules. You really haven't showen your work if you use a texture that someone else made.

Looks like people preferred to vote on the Art of 2015 challenge. This is just looking at the front page blue ribbons only.
Shall we conclude that they were more interested in artsy pics?

This site is pretty funny when you look at it. And your comment about guidelines is not wrong.

If this site was about short story writing instead of photography, no matter the topic, there would be romantic novels, action novels, travel, fantasy, etc. You may hate all of those genres in totality. And that is fine. What is not fine is to presume to limit the imagination and creativity of the authors based on the fact that, for example, you are only a fan of romantic stories. Just because you neither like or understand the other alternatives is no reason to picket their inclusion

We used to do something like that frequently; detailed, extremely specific "challenge descriptions" telling people what an entry ought to encompass, basically. People didn't like that at all; something about "stifling creativity" ;-) Lately we've had some special rules with DQ possible for disregarding them. People REALLY don't like that.

I can't speak for the rest of SC (we don't all see eye-to-eye on a lot of issues) but I don't see what the fuss is about overlays. My attitude is, lay 'em on and let the voters worry about it. It doesn't look to me like they have driven "regular photographs" off the front page, and they've been legal for quite a while now...

So an example of making your own texture would be Andres Serrano's "Piss Christ"

I am sure he didn't use photoshop 🤓

I like the quote "if two people always agree, only one of those people is needed" so disagreement is excellent! Good to hear!

Couldn't agree more with your last paragraph. Nicely put.

Edited for subjective opinion.

"You've been here a month and entered a few challenges. Stick around, get to know us, and maybe even learn a thing or two.
Relax and enjoy. Show us you're that good a photographer and the heck with what anyone else does."

I think you misunderstood me, I was simply giving my two cents worth/opinion from one of the original posts. Isn't the forum used for that reason? Everyone has an opinion and should voice them when the opportunity calls for it. I do plan on sticking around and I haven't claimed anywhere that I was some sort of great photographer, I am just an amateur like most here and want to learn from the professionals, and by what I've seen so far there are quite a few. I think constructive critiques are what counts the most.

This particular two cents has been offered many many times.

So I have some homework for you--please define "photographic in nature" for me.

Do I get milk and crackers after I complete my homework assignment?
