Are you aware that if one enters an image taken from one's Smartphone... the image will appear right side up on the cellphone (on everyone's cellphone) but will not have been flipped to up right in reality... the cellphone does it for us. When viewed on a computer, the image will be sideways.. just as it was entered.

Not cool.

Seems like there should be something on the site to prevent this. If the software can't be fixed, at least a warning should be issued to check orientation on a computer, not a cellphone before voting begins.

It's discouraging to find your hard-earned image bombing because it's not rotated as your cellphone shows you that it was.

That's not really fair, Jeb :-( The point here is that you can't TELL it's a problem unless you have a computer to hand to check it. It makes entering things from a cell phone sort of hit-or-miss, but there's a tag in there (I *think*) that the site could be taught to read...

I've spent the last few years trying to get a fellow photographer... whom I really admire... to enter a challenge here at DPC. Have probably mentioned it a hundred times. Finally, I saw the PERFECT image of his for the challenge topic. I finally talked him into entering.

It was a member's only challenge and I paid the $5 just to have him enter. I knew if he did well... he'd be "hooked" on DPC.

That person did what I described in my original post. The image bombed, of course... and the person probably won't enter again. It was a really good image and would have done well.

I don't think he was lazy... just... believed what he saw on the site... on his cellphone... was truth.

That's not good for "business" here at DPC... that's my opinion.

Jeb - You want me to say if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything.

Jeb's been addressed by SC, so no more personal comments please. Stick to the thread topic.

Ummmm... Lydia...

Well...

You should be careful what words you strike out -- they can be hard to read that way...

I read it that you both have feces!

And while it may be true...

TMI!! :)

I think digital has redefined again and again the process, to use your words "a typical exercise as a photographer".

The first digital camera I got took 640x480 pictures, held about 10 of them, there was no expandable memory slot and you could only erase the most recent picture you'd taken. It had to be imported with the app it came with, and I think the cable was proprietary. The process was far removed from what I usually do now on the computer, but it was still digital photography.

I have also experimented with some of the cell phone camera and processing apps, and I have also experienced the above mentioned issue. Honestly, the cell phone is a type of computer when it's a smartphone. It just runs a different OS and a different browser.

The entry of mine this happened to was an attempt at the brown ribbon, so no harm done! LOL

Well I have been here a month and I have seen friendly suggestion and observances but I haven't seen any demands whatsoever. If it is bad to type opinions here then close the forums and cutoff all communications so you can be here another ten years, without any new members signing up then when you are here by yourself you will be happy again, or just an old angry fart.

Guess I won't be entering anything for a few weeks then, I wasn't aware of the smartphone bug, thanks for letting me know Lydia.

Horizontal images are always safe. It's verticals not reading properly that's the issue, and only then if you upload directly from your phone.

Was gonna say. I've entered from the phone before. Didn't have an issue.

<-- Uploaded from my kayak on the bay.

Now I understand why my granddaughters keep putting sideways pictures on Facebook.

Bingo! :-) It isn't a "DPC Problem", it's a real world lameness problem...

When you upload for a challenge, either put it in your workshop and check it from there to see if it needs rotating, or upload it to the challenge page, and click the "Preview" button to see if it's upright on the page.

If it's not right side up, then rotate it in the phone and upload it again.

Repeat as necessary until it's right.

Somehow it still shows as upright on the preview page in iOS Safari. Not sure about Android browser.

But on desktop browsers it's sideways.
