I'm extremely curious to know if when you vote on an image do you consider the title when you evaluate it?

Do you always look at the title, or only when you're trying to figure out what the photographer was trying to show you, if then?

Can a title change the way you perceive and/or score an image?

I'm not a big fan of having to create names for things, and photographs in particular, but at the same time the fact that one is required here I would want to believe that people are considering the title when looking at an image. More times than not, for me, a title won't take away from an image but it can certainly bring added perspective on the shot. I'm not going to whack an image for being titled DSC_xxxx.jpg, but I might boost the score of one where the image and title tell a more complete story than the image alone.

That's exactly how I feel and act about titles.

Fair warning, there have been almost as many threads about this as about voting patterns (scary, eh?) ... :-)

My summary is that some people like/consider them, others hate them, and most people are somewhat indifferent.

Early on we changed the layout of the voting page to move the title below the image -- it used to be on top -- so that anyone who wanted to view the image while ignoring the title would have the option to do so.

People are also free to title their entry "Untitled" if they want, though it's always seemed to me that in any challenge with a topic (i.e. not Free Studies) the challenge topic would be the de facto title, even if it was otherwise left blank.

Personally, I come from a typographical background, so I'm pretty sure my titles are typically better than my photos. :-)

I might add a point for an exceptional title, but I'm more likely to add (or, I suppose, potentially deduct) a point for a title which somehow helps me "appreciate" the image more than what I was able from viewing it alone.

Also, as a practical matter, having unique titles helps in locating images in the database ...

I've been a heavy reader and writer my whole life and worked professionally as an advertising copywriter, so for me, the answer is a resounding yes. There is just something that is so disheartening about seeing a really great image and then just, like you said, DSC_XXXXX or img.XXXXXX underneath it. I feel it shows sloppiness on the part of the photog. If your heart is not in the challenge enough, that you can't even be bothered to enter something in the title field - even a lame attempt or even the dreaded 'Untitled' - then it kind of prepares me to be disappointed by the image. Not always the case but often seems to be.

If I'm on the fence, the title may sway me.

:( titles:
titles that repeat to me the text I already read in the image
too deep
not deep enough
misfocused
misspelled
overly obvious

:) titles:

ambiguous
clever*
funny*
weird*
silly*
identifying an interesting location

*but not too much so ;P

Well, also to be fair, I don't think there has been one all that recently (a couple of years according to this crude search).

I feel much better now for asking. ;-)

My most-hated title is a keyword search title and/or "you looking at me?"

Yes to titles. They can add a lot. But please, no more 'Pretty in Pink'. Ever.

A title can make or break an image.

And no more images with the title,'Untitled'. They should be dq'd immediately for lack of attempt at originality.

Think about it. Would you go through all the financial and physical stress of having a baby, only to then name them 'Dumbass'? Probably not.

So why be so lazy and negligent in naming your pics?

Just make them short and to the point ...

I'm waiting for someone, somewhere, to name the baby, "Untitled".

I think the equivalent would be naming your baby 'Unnamed'. Some Hollywood celeb will do it one day.

Frank Zappa's kids seem to have done OK despite (because of?) their unusual names ...

ETA: However The Artist Formerly-Known As The Artist Formerly-Known As Prince must get writer's cramp after just a couple of autographs ...

I hate having to have titles.

This is a photography site... not a creative writing one.

And... I think that any image either works for the challenge topic on its own... or it doesn't.

Yet still... I see that titles can both help and harm an image for a particular challenge topic.

Do we want words for our images? Or is our single image worth "a thousand words"?

:D

But... if we have to have titles, may we PLEASE never have another animal asking us... "What are YOU looking at?"

Titles matter to me, extra points for something clever, funny, thoughtful, etc. Points off for some things. For some reason spaced out titles a n n o y me and I'm not sure why. Same for longish poem or literature quotes. A title shouldn't be longer than the actual photograph IMO.

I do agree that a good photo is indeed worth a thousand words, but summing up the essence of the photo in a title does no harm at all. And yes I fully agree, no more bird/animal shots titled 'What are YOU looking at?' Been done to death, no longer funny.
