I've never created a photo book. I assumed that they had the software. I actually thought I tried it a couple of years ago and that it was relatively simple to have the photos and the text and arrange it.

It looks like I have to find the software. Making it in photoshop sounds incredibly painful.

How are you creating your photo books? I'm three days into it and wanted to start putting it together so that I actually kept going with it. Please help!

Thanks!

I use page-layout software (e.g. Quark or Adobe InDesign) -- that's it's for (laying out pages). You can probably also use most word-processing software (e.g. Microsoft Word) as long as it can import the pictures, but it's often harder to get exactly the look you want. Ultimately you output your pages to a PDF file, which is what you upload.

ETA: If you do end up using Photoshop, create each page in its own file. Remember that if it's for viewing on-screen only you can make it all low-resolution (usually 72 or 96 dpi); just make a blank page the size you want the pages, paste in the photos and create the type -- it's not that hard. The individual PDF pages can be assembled into a single document later (I can probably help with that).

Wendy, do you use Lightroom? If you do, you can use the Blurb book programme and then export the book to pdf. It's pretty straight forward. Much easier than trying to create your own in other software.

If you do not have Lightroom, then I think you can also print to pdf from the Blurb software Bookwright or Booksmart. You'd have to download that from the Blurb site

ETA. I don't think you can print to pdf from Bookwright. There is an option to save as pdf, but it adds a whole bunch of "this is a proof" text. I'm also not sure if you can use Booksmart these days, but at least that I believe allows you to print to pdf.

I've used both. Booksmart is much more flexible than Lightroom. However, if you don't want to arrange multiple photos on the page, or have irregular page layouts, then LR is easier since you can work with your original files, rather than exports. This lets you go in and make an adjustment to a picture without reexporting it and replacing the "copy" that's already in the book.

I've never tried Bookwright. Must be newer than Booksmart.

I use InDesign. Word would probably work but I think it would be difficult to get a customized look. Publisher would probably be better than Word, but I haven't used it in many years.

Yes, Bookwright is the latest software for Blurb. you can still get Booksmart, but Bookwright runs much faster. However, one of the benefits of Booksmart is that you can export to pdf.

I can also recommend Scribus (especially for SoFoBoMo). It has a learning curve (as all DTP programs), but is works great for me.
