Street photography - ethics - respect

I'm pretty much in the same boat with this chap, except that because of that I just don't do a whole lot of street photography ...

Actually, maybe ironically considering the latter part of the article, I make an exception when it comes to taking pictures of people taking pictures ...

It's an interesting and important topic. I have found that my own street shooting style moved away from candids due to feeling slightly uncomfortable .

it's pretty much the same way I take people in the street. I NEVER had problems taking pictures that way. I must say that Taiwanese people are very friendly. What I had problems with, was taking pictures of buildings. Those guards are stupid. I have a bunch of business cards ready in case...

Interesting.

I normally need an article like this to start thinking about such a subject, so thank you.

I struggle with street photography. It's easier for me at events, but I do like to take un-posed shots of people going about their business.

Mark Cohen and Bruce Gilden are in your face street photographers. I believe their desire to capture something new and unique drives them. I could never imagine myself intruding into somebody's personal space as they do. That being said, all street photographers are taking advantage of people and their situations. Suspecting or not, they are actors in the street photographers story.

All the reasons I don't do/enjoy street photography. I hate sneaking about, it makes me feel like I'm stealing something, and it feels all sorts of wrong to me. I prefer an acknowledged exchange with my subjects. Even if it happens in the street. On occassion I address someone interesting, and ask if I can take their picture. The creative energy flow between us is a real high for me.

Nice article. I've taken a few candid street shots and apart from maybe one time : I've never had a problem, and that one instance was completely my own fault, I was lucky to get away unharmed though. I generally don't feel happy about taking a shot if it feels excessively sneaky or I know the person would go bananas if they knew, you get a feeling for the atmosphere and you know if it's wrong. This photo I sold twice and one was a really big copy, a few months ago I bumped into the family I sold it to, they said they had some decorating done by a young guy who had recognised his uncle in the photo, apparently he was over the moon and not at all offended.
