We were together last month. If she's not (yet) actively engaged, I know she's actively spectating.

I assumed Georges' "no comprendo" was about Pokemon Go rather than Deb/Melethia.

Ha! Deb does NOT play but Deb actively enjoys watching the phenomenon that is Pokemon Go. My jogging partner plays and this means interrupted running sessions, as her phone will buzz her if one is nearby, at which point she has to check and see if she has it yet. If not, we have to stop and catch the darn thing.

But one can spot PokePlayers pretty quickly. Generally teenaged boys who look like they have only very recently ventured forth into the Real World and are still somewhat unsure of their footing. That, and they carry battery packs, because it sucks the power out of their phones pretty quickly.

Oh, and hi!

In my view Pokemon Go is a pretty innocuous game. Players move around the real world trying to catch imaginary creatures. It can get people off the couch and outside exploring new areas. Sure, players can do stupid things like walk out into traffic while focused on their phone searching for Pokemon, but kids can walk out into traffic playing tag or about any game.

I think the game is relatively popular in Australia. If you check with your kids (even the older ones), I might be surprised if none had ever at least tried it. And, if they had, it would not be the end of the world.

Reminds me of a very nice evening walk with my kids. First (and last) hunt! I did catch a few :)

It is very easy to be dismissive of things that you aren't interested in. Like. Loads of people I know think it's bizarre that I participate in this website, and the only explanation I have for them is that i enjoy it. I don't need to explain beyond this. It's the same with Pokemon. It's a game, and like many games, people enjoy it. What else needs to be said?

Not picking on Neat here, but she said something I have heard a lot, so I'm going to quote her as a proxy to quoting the semtiment. I'm honestly upset by the continuous statements that go along the line of "so proud no one in my family/friends plays". The reason it upsets me is because it is such a narrow point of view. If you say this, you really have to question whether recreational golf, unpaid photography, any kind of gaming, or anything else that people receive personal and subjective satisfaction from are equally pathetic.

To everyone that is dismissive of the game: does anyone in your family or circle of friends play other games? If so, why would playing Pokemon go be any different or so much worse?

Not liking the game is fine if you have played it, or if you don't like any games in general, but trivialised dismissal of things simply on principle really bothers me. (This last part is definitely not directed at people here, but a general statement about myself.)

Anyway. I'm up for this challenge! :-)

The reason I said what I said, is because I would rather our children be exploring the real world, instead of the imaginary, getting dirty in sandpits, building makeshift houses, climbing trees and just being kids when they were young. We limited time they spent in front of the tv as small children and didn't purchase a computer until our eldest was around 8 or 9yrs of age, only because her teachers insisted she type out her homework rather than handwriting it, mind you it wasn't like we need a computer back then, we did fine without one.

The reason I said I'm proud of my kids is they don't have any game addiction's unlike some kids they knew at school who lived, and breathed for computer games, some would play all weekend long. I was quite flabbergasted to think that parents actually allowed this! We taught our kids that books were much more educational and would benefit them in the long run when they went out in the workforce, so they read a lot!

My daughter actually graduated from college in May, and started her new job recently, one of the reasons her employer gave to her for hiring her, was the fact that she could write, yes fancy that, she can write, yes much better than me I say! Her employer said it's so hard to find a graduate who can actually structure a proper sentence these days. My husband sees that all the time at his work place, young people with a university degree who can't string a sentence together. Our middle son is still at college, but he writes part time, he's a news analyst and loves it!

Young son use to play Minecraft when he was around 12 -13 but we would only allow him to play for around 45 mins, 3 times a week, he was fine with that, and it did seem rather educational. Then I noticed he didn't play anymore, I said "why". He said "I felt like it was wasting my time". I was quite proud of him, that he came to that conclusion at a fairly young age.

stop, the young generation isn't wasting away on computers, if anything the amazing computer technology we have is partly because people grew up playing with and understanding computers and programming. there is no point in chastising the younger generation because they don't do things the way we did. Society is different, its not better or worse, its just different.

in my field, young engineers are more apt to using new technology and approaches to engineering than the "dinosaurs" who are stuck in their ways and resist anything progressive because its not the way they learned. if anything i have more faith for the future because of how the younger generation has shown to be able to adapt to a rapidly changing environment. they are more accepting of people wand and things that are different.

In my area, the poeple that play are the kids that grew up with the original pokemon when they were playing with the cards that are now in their 20's.
My son was into it, and as a matter of fact still has his original cards he has saved. Even though my son does not play pokemon go nor does my daughter, my friends kids and parents do. A couple of ppl have lost weight because of the walking. There are a few hikes which are pretty intense and that is where the good pokemon are. It gets the kids outside and it is their time they enjoy together. Instead of the parks being empty except for the regular dog walkers, I can now go to the park and there are tons of kids playing, socializing, and just having fun with nothing to worry about. That is a good sight to see.

I rather see them outside playing than indoors playing Call of Duty strapped on with a headset yelling at each other. Good and bad come with everything. I enjoy things others do not and visa versa, its what I call why judge when people sin differently than you do. It is the new craze until something else comes around. I will be happy to bet anyone that the next craze will be even more annoying than Pokemon Go. The times have so changed. At the same time, its nice to see some nostalgia come back like, for Nov. When the ninetendo comes back with the games of Mario Brothers and Donkey Kong.
I will be getting that, it will be game on!

I had Pokemon installed for about 20 minutes and was able to capture 2 pokemon. 1 was located on my possum.
I noticed how much battery it sucked, I was done.

I would re-download it for the challenge.

I'm of mixed mind about Pokemon Go. I've heard enough stories about Pokemon Go players blundering into traffic etc, and even worse in that the nearest big city to me is my nation's capital.

On the one hand, I am glad to see it getting kids out of the house...but at the same time, they're staring at a screen and blindly walking along, not necessarily interacting with anyone else as they chase Pokemon.

Go ride a bike, go climb trees, go hike the Gats, go for a walk through the Byward Market...and leave the damn phones behind.

Its a shame really how addicting phones are and how people can not put them down.

Yep. People have always moaned about what kids do with their time. I hate all this anti-technology nonsense. Years ago it was grown-ups moaning if kids watched tv, before that if they read comics, before that if they always had their nose in a book. I'd be happy if kids grew up not to be patronising, judgmental arses about what other people do with their time.
