Hey all

I have a good-sized, well-padded LowePro camera knapsack that makes a great home for all my lenses, camera body and accessories...but damn does it ever weigh a ton. Even when empty, it's a good 5lbs of weight on its own. Ryan's own LowePro knapsack, a much older model than mine, weighed in at 9 lbs when empty. Also the size and shape of the bag means that it's a tight fit for carry-on luggage, when I travel. And even with only 2 or 3 lenses in it, still weighty. Full, it must be around 20lbs.

I don't have the time or $$ to shop for a smaller version, so what I am doing is taking a regular knapsack and putting in the lenses I know I will be using the most in the lens carriers they came with (advantages to buying a lens new!) and stuffing around them with clothing etc. This solution should be adequate.

Meantime, anyone got any other suggestions? I usually take the 18-200, the 70-200 and the 50.

You will be limited somewhat by the 70-200. It requires a bigger bag. Otherwise, there are lots of great small bags that can fit the D7100, 18-200, a 10-20mm sigma, and 10.5mm fisheye (my old travel kit).

One really light bag is the lowepro sport series. The orange version of the Lowepro photo sport II was heavily discounted at one time, and so you can find people selling them relatively cheap, e.g.,

//www.ebay.com/itm/Lowepro-Photo-Sport-200-AW-DSLR-Orange-Camera-Photo-Bag-Backpack-Weather-Cover/321792595499?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D40148%26meid%3Dac1ed4591e7a437cad95b6a863b0201d%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D112187462474

My favorite almost nothing in size and weight kit bag for the 7100, 18-200, 10-20, and 10.5 was the old flap over the front version of the Tamrac Velocity 6 sling. But it won't carry the 70-200 with the camera. I still use and love that bag for traveling light with a similar kit.

On the BH site, you can specify weight range as a criteria when searching bags. I'm sure you'll find some ideas there.

Here is what I got Susan ~

Sling Bag

It's comfortable and fits me well (I'm 5'4"). I can take in the bag several filter packs (2-4), 70-300mm, 90mm, 12-24mm & my camera (D7000). It's full mind you but it all fits. I carry one of the lens on the camera body.

Great padding for longer hikes and I can pack it within a suitcase to pull out at my destination.

Those look very similar to the Lowepro Slingshot bags - I love my Lowepro Slingshot 202

Looked at both quickly, either one could be a more feasible option than the monster. Thanks much for your input!

I've traveled with the 3n1-33 . Less than 3lb when empty, which is nice considering it's not much heavier than my Speedo swim pack. Fits in the overhead storage bin. I liked that it fits a laptop. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/892805-REG/Kata_kt_dl_3n1_33_3_In_1_Sling.html . Though after the trip. Laptop (3lb), Camera(7D + 2lenses), adapters, socks and some toiletries. I wish that thing had wheels. It propped up rather well onto my wheeled luggage, though still not optimal I made it over some cobble stones. The issue with a bigger pack like this is, it's too easy to over pack it. Without the laptop in it, it's a very doable full day pack.
