I bought the Canon 80D yesterday and did a bit of shooting today but as yet I haven't downloaded photos onto my computer because I want to work out my software issues first. I'm still using Photoshop CS5, which won't work with my RAW files.

What is the best software - third party or Canon - to convert them to a format which ACR will be able to read?

For the time being, use Adobe's DNG converter to make DNG files out of them, and then open them as you have been. Advantage is that after converting them, your workflow does not change. Alternatively you can use the Canon software that was bundled with the camera. It does a fine job, but of course not as familiar.

ETA:
Be sure to retain the Canon RAW files for DPC entries! My personal opinion would be to retain them in any case, eventually you will update software and the compatibility problem will be moot.

Thanks kirbic. I almost never delete files - not even the duds.

Just as a matter of interest, there was no software bundled with the camera. Canon now expect users to download it from their website. That's why I wasn't sure which programs to download given the fact that my internet connection is slow compared to what many people have. I'll try the DNG converter, but my internet is really playing up tonight, so I guess it's not the best time to download anything. Thankfully I had the camera set to RAW + jpg so I can at least edit the jpg files for now.
