December 9th and 10th me and a friend of mine are headed to New Orleans!

For the people who have been there, what should I not miss? I am well aware that there will be plenty of bars to go to... But what about places to eat? I hear the food there is impeccable and don't want to miss out on the good stuff? Also, the sites... I want to make sure those two short days will be filled with all the good stuff and nothing boring!

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

P.s. - Although this trip won't be for taking photos, I'll be bringing it for the street photography opportunity so if there's any close by parks or whatever I might be able to get away for a bit to take some scenery shots since I'll have my camera anyways...

I expect to be there for a couple of days in October for work. Should have an evening or two to explore with the camera.

Update on this,

My parents may come with us! Which would lend more time with them and less time doing photos... However, that said my camera equipment is still coming with me so that I can get some street photography done. I hear it's a great spot for some night life photography as well as street performer photography. I'm excited! :)

New Orleans is practically a self-guided tour. Start anywhere in the proximity of the French Quarter, and you'll experience instant visual overload. Street photography, portraiture, architecture -- it's all there. From Bourbon Street it's a short walk to Jackson Square. St. Louis Cathedral is there. Stop by Cafe du Monde for café au lait and beignets (though the locals will tell you better beignets can be had elsewhere). There's music in the streets and great food (and drink!) everywhere. Weather in December should be okay. Summer can be unbearable, especially to an outsider. DPCer crik lives there and has been know to do meet and greet. Have fun!

I've lived in Florida my entire life... Warmth doesn't bother me. Haha. It's the cold that bothers me! Sadly anything below 60 and I'm dressed like an Eskimo. Lol.

I saw there was all kinds of rave around for this place. What in the world is it? Like a fancy Starbucks?

As for crik, I will reach out but because I'm only there for a short time and I will be with family, I don't know how much time I will have to be able to and wouldn't want to get her out and about just to say hi and then part ways. That wouldn't be fair to her.

Oh yes... I will be eating and drinking more than my body can handle. Lol!

Starbucks?? Bite your tongue! Café au lait is equal parts coffee and milk (putting it simply). Beignets are "French donuts" -- like funnel cake, but formed into squares and more puffy. Covered with powdered sugar, they're quite divine. I grew up (from age ten to twenty) in South Louisiana and get back there every so often. Beignets are the thing I miss the most!

Lol. Sorry to offend! :P

Sadly I'm not that fond of sweets. But I will indulge in the tasting of these beignets. Can't promise I'll like them but I will try it just to say I did. And before you say it, I know... I know I'm strange for not liking sweets all that much.

Ha! Try harder. You can always ask for little or no powdered sugar. The dough itself is a little sweet but not too much. Enjoy!

I'll try it out. Thanks for this. I know my friend will be all into this so she appreciates the suggestion!

October and December are some of our "good weather " months mbrutus2009 and Yo_Spiff, although there's always an outside chance for cold air. Right now it's about 95 - feeling like 107! bvy covered it all - you'll be right in the mix of it if you're in downtown New Orleans. Many good restaurants in the area, Galatoires, Irene's, Muriel's ,Commanders Palace (streetcar ride), Central Grocery for muffulettas. Besides the many photo opps for street shots there are museums(WWII), the aquarium and a casino. I'll send other links or contact info later via PM in case there's a chance for a gtg. bvy I know you'll be getting some of those beignets!

Haven't been there since... last week! :)

You won't have any trouble finding interesting things to shoot, particularly in the French Quarter. And you do have to try the Cafe DuMonde treats, because everyone will ask you if you had them after your trip, and you don't want to sound foolish. :P

I had the good fortune of running into fellow DPC'er L2 while I was there. Seems like every time I've been there, I've managed to meet someone new from the site!

And don't be afraid to engage! The locals are some of the most colorful people you'll meet anywhere. Salt of the earth.

I've never been to New Orleans, but there is a street band there I'd love to see, Tuba Skinny. They have a dog.

I didn't see the dog but did see Tuba Skinny on stage at the French Quarter Festival in April, tnun. They were very good. Hope they are back next year - a good time to visit too.

You're right about that. Are you going to be in town for work or vacation in October?

Neither really. I'm accompanying my wife who is co-organizer of her class reunion in Baton Rouge. It will be over a long weekend (Columbus Day). I'll keep you posted!
