photographing the moon and moonlit landscapes

I think this would be an excellent challenge for dpl. It looked like a really great article (just skimmed it so far).

A great chance to play with techniques.

Why are there funky letters in my post? It looks normal when I edit it....?

Apparently you've inserted a zero-width space: //www.codetable.net/decimal/8203

I've seen that if you used an emoji on cell phone and the web browser doesn't recognize it...

Anyway, I'm down for this challenge now that I'm rid of my old noise machine (D200)... :)

This sounds interesting...but could we include Moonless (Milky Way)? I know it’s the opposite and it would depend on when the challenge is posted...grin

Both are fine, but please if they get used do not include them in the DPL. Access to skies that can take advantage of this are near impossible in the northeast in many areas (light pollution) and to restrict it to a one week challenge would make it even more difficult to impossible for many.

Yes, but if it’s Moonlit...noise pollution wouldn’t matter...just curious Jake where you are...I’ve done lighthouses with the moon and even lakes...I’ll admit you need low LP as possible for Moonless...and some kind of interesting foreground...

We did Night Sky III about a year ago ... unless there's a specific desire to have the Moon included, the more generic "night sky" is likely to afford more opportunities to make a creative image.

There will still be a challenge every week during the DPL season which will have a two-week submission period and not count toward DPL scoring.

Understood, and I'm lobbying that if you're going to do it during DPL that it's the non-DPL challenge.

I'm near the Delaware Water Gap, so sure, I've got places I could go to for either. But I've experienced more than my fair share of atmospheric phenomena or night sky activities that were thwarted by either weather or a glow on the horizon. For example I spent 2 months preparing for a Super Moon, using the Photographer's Ephemeris app to make sure that I would be in the perfect position to get the moon rising next to the perfect object to set it against, only to have a clear sky turn cloudy 10 minutes before moonrise. Then the total eclipse this past summer we had a cloud bank come in 1 minute before the maximum eclipse visible in our area and stay for 15 which screwed me on the time series I was doing.

I'm just saying that it's a crap shoot even for the most prepared photographer, which is why I believe it would be an injustice to put it as a part of the DPL when there's only one weekend where you might want to go out to a place where you can make a photo like that more than just a view of a backyard or something.

I agree with you -- that's why I noted that it could be run during DPL without being a part of DPL ...

Bummer about the eclipse ...

No one can plan for Mother-Natures interference for sure. And given how spread out our team is. (UK /FL/PA/WA/UT) someone should get “something”...

As you said the best laid out plans can head south given the wrong weather conditions.

I’m just hoping for interesting subjects for DPL vs obscure...lol

I would try this in spite of the fact I'm in a kind of photographic sabbatical right now. Great suggestion Janine!

I'm not a fan of the topic, but I'll try to shoot for it, if it has to happen. Ha!

My apology to Wendy who suggested the idea (not Janine). I've enjoyed shooting by moonlight over the years.. you can do so much once you get used to the shutter speeds and settings required for moonlit nights. Also perfect time of year for this.

I was just teasing Janine. :D

I was excited to see the article, because even though I really enjoy shots with the moon, and got one incredible moonlit shot ages ago,I just never think about doing it. So it would be a fun thing to try.

As to extending it to night sky, I'd rather not. Northern lights and milky way shots would win things hands down. The moon is something that's more of a common denominator for everyone to play with.

I realize that you can get shut out with rainy weather, but really, you can come up with that argument for any challenge topic.

But that's why I like dpc - getting us out of our comfort zone. Seriously: how many people spend a lot of time taking pictures of their left foot??!

Anyone eager to shoot the moon or any moonlit landscape can do so in the current Late Night Boredom challenge. No need to make it a separate challenge.
