The night pictures were kind of a let down to me, for some reason. Lots of pointless clicking of this and that-- lots of inane blurryness, etc. (Maybe I just need some sleep...)

I actually thought that the average quality was higher than any other challenge I'd seen. I enjoyed seeing how other people worked this one out.

I agree. While there are SOME nice photos, I feel that some people are just submitting for the sake of submitting. When I first joined the site, I felt somewhat comfortable with submitting a photo that I feel may not be 110% my best work -- after all, there were only 20 entries. However, as the number of submissions have increased, I feel that my NOT submitting an entry may add value to the site when I know my photo is not the best of my work. Why make other photographers go through 50+ photos when only about 20 of them are worthwhile to look at?

That is my two cents, anyway.

If yours is the one I think it is, you've raised the bar considerably.
03/25/2002 09:13:44 AM · #6
Why discourage submissions? Not everyone is going to win a challenge and they may be using this as a learning experience. I probably won't submit this time not because I am bowing out to the more "experienced" photographers, but because I find most architecture photos to be rather boring and I will not have much personal time to put into photography this week.

I agree with shortredneck. After all, aren't we here to learn and better our photographic ability through comments and suggestions made by others? BTW, you don't have to vote on all submissions at one time if it is tiring.

Hi dequinix, i have to disagree as well, i thought the quality of the shots went up again this round.

Arnit, you need to put a gallery up on the Web! Then you could easily share your alternates, even have people comment on them.

Sometimes learning how to take better pictures involve looking at other good pictures, rather than submitting a bad photo and subsequently getting a low score.

Again, just my two cents. I am not saying nobody should submit, or should be intimidated to submit.

Please don't mistake me.

I'm more than willing to go through a bunch of not-so-spectacular photos if there's the chance that people will comment on them to help the photographer take a better shot the next time. While I won't comment on a picture that has no interest to me whatsoever, if there's a theme or trick or detail I like I'll try to write a little something to nudge the photographer in the right (I should probably say my) direction, the same for a really interesting shot marred by some glaring technical flaw.

So all you people out there considering holding back because you don't feel up to the challenge, I'd submit anyway. But if you don't, you should at least keep with it and shoot a bunch of photos for every competition, 'cause that's the way to get better!

I'm eagerly anticipating watching a bunch of our photographers progress from humble beginnings to amazing results, and the only way we'll be able to witness that is if they keep posting. It's a really great feeling watching someone progress like that!

I agree. I'm not a great photographer and I have submitted less than spectacular photos. However, I have already learned a few things from the comments and tips from others. My night picture will probably not be a contender either, but technically I achieved the look I was after. Now if only someone was brave enough to offer an opinion or tip on mine. I have had 50 votes and no comments.

A Comment! I finally got a comment! Funny one too!

I'm no great photographer. I've been at it a few months and joined the site to help me learn. I only have one comment thus far. But it was such a simple and great comment. I think it would have taken me months to figure out what that person took the time to say. I was just down right thrilled. :) It wasn't something I could have learned from just looking at good photos.

I found out how to get comments on my first picture. I thought we had to have a date on it. (You can see how much an amateur I am.) Anyway, that gave me plenty of comments.

shortredneck ... I agree. I live about 15 miles from you and there's not a lot around here that jumps out at me.

I'm new here and this is a new hobby for me so even though I may not win or be the best... I am going to start joining in here and learn if nothing else:)

Hey, welcome aboard! What part of Lake Martin are you from? I don't often go up there since many of my in-laws live on Lake Jordan, but I'm familiar with much of the area. You should have lots of photo opportunities since Martin is so beautiful. When we have a water challenge you will blow us all away.

Thanks for the welcome. Lake Martin *is* a beautiful place:)
I've had no classes or anything but really want to learn more. I need to go this week and buy a better digital.
This is just a couple of my first photos I've gone out and tried.

This was made at Santuck of the old store that closed there.

Email or icq me if you want to go out and take pics with me sometimes. I look forward to joining in some weekly contest here:)

Wow, those are beautiful! I grew up in the Snowdoun area and I love pictures of old buildings. I will definately have to take you up on that offer.

And who determines the "worthwhile" photos?

Amen to that. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Question...
Can anyone tell me why the picture inside bus with the kids is off the voting page? I can't remember the title, I liked that shot! Just wondering...

03/27/2002 09:35:56 AM · #24
I liked it too. I wonder if it got disqualified for some reason.
03/27/2002 12:21:20 PM · #25
Yes, where did it go? I *hope* it wasn't disqualified!
