I'm completely new to photography, and just opened a page on flickr to host my photos. I basically have no clue what I'm doing. If anyone would like to comment on a couple of the photos from my profile I will return comments and greatly appreciate it. I'm looking to improve, so mostly looking for the negative. Thanks in advance!

Pic1
This is me holding up a ski a couple days ago.

Pic2
This is my sister's two dogs laying on the same dock.

On a side note I entered my first challenge (Branch) and have gotten some good comments on what I need to work on. I'm currently at 5.1 with 154 votes. I know it's not a ribbon winner, but it got a better response than I anticipated.

Good stuff...right off the only thing I might suggest when shooting with water in the shot is to watch the horizions...the tilt is really evident in Pic 2. When you have a water line you want it either level or over exaggerate it making it appear intentional... otherwise the viewer will tilt their head to correct the shot (and you don't want them doing that). Just make thoughts.

Love the colors btw.

If you live in Oregon you could easily get a ribbon :P

Im not good, but heres my comments anyway!

Umm...pic 1 I like. I really like silouette photos, especially by the water with a sunset. Overall I think its really good, and the only thing I could think of was maybe if there was more color in the sky, but i think thats more personal preference, than it is a technical bad.

Pic 2-Its funny as soon as I seen the picture, I thought warm, romantic, maybe even wise. But then contrasting that the subjects make it sort of funny, and light hearted feeling. I think that the moods conflict, but I may be completely off my rocker. I would of like to seen just one of the subjects (the right one) on the same background. I think it would of reached in deeper for me anyway.

Thanks for the comments! Awpollard, you're definately right, the horizon is distracting. I honestly never really thought about it until I had a different photo of a river shot critiqued after I took that one, and immediately got a lot of people mentioning the horizon wasn't level.
Sacredspirit, thanks. I know what you mean about the second pic. I was thinking the same thing when I took it, and that's what led me to take this photo...

But again, the horizon isn't straight. haha

Owe yes, I really like that one! That one is very, very good. You know I never noticed the horizon, but I caught myself tilting my head after ya'll mentioned it. At any rate, very nice. GL.

I wonder what it would look like if the subject took up more space.

It's only my personal preference, but I might have gone for a longer exposure to get a smoother sea, particularly in the 3rd pic.

The 3rd pic is much better than the second - much less cluttered.

Just my 5 eggs worth...

Edit: more typos, sorry!

His lightsabre has been taken away, he's marooned hundreds of miles inland at school now

I think Pic 1 is great! Fantastic composition and clarity. You want to watch your horizon line though - I think it's just a hair off in this one, but way off in Pic 2. The dogs are cute and you have nice colors in the sky, but not sure there's actually enough there to hold the viewer's attention - you might consider a tighter crop. Nice work period (for newbie, amateur, or anyone for that matter). :-)

I like the third the best of the three. I think it may be even stronger if you cropped a bit of the foreground out to focus more attention on the silhouette itself (which is much more interesting than the deck, in my opinion).

Bwahahahahaha!
Actually, I've seen a bunch of his shots from Spokane and they're almost as spectacular, lol.
It's really not fair--I live in OR too and I don't get amazing shiz like he does! :P

Oh yeah, and as for your pictures: gotta agree with everyone else, horizon's off, but other than that, nice work, especially for a n00b. : ) I like the colours and the silhouettes are awesome.
