Does the "no filters" rule apply to physical filters as well? i.e. Cokin, etc? The ones that I'd use directly on the lens of the camera? Or is it just post-processing?

Post processing only. Anything you do "in camera" is legal.

What John said. Any filter you physically put in front of the lens is perfectly fine :-)

Seems ironic that physical filters are allowed but software equivalent ones are not, doesn't it? But there is good reason for it.

The main purpose of the site is to teach and improve your photography skills and not to improve photo editing skills. Yes, photo editing is a fundamental and necessary skill but there is plenty of flexibility within the existing rules to practice editing.

Creativity is the ability to transcend restrictions within the boundary of rules.

Good. Might be handy for "blue" ;-)
