I know the voting process of using the mouse or trackball is ok. But I would like to know if a keypad voting system would work or if it could be coded. I like using the numeric key pad on my keyboard and think it would be nice when the picture loads you could for example press 6 and it would log your score and go to the comment section. If you want to comment do so and press enter. If you don’t want to comment just press enter. Comment or no comment, when you press the enter key it would take you to the next picture.

I believe this would save time. The way we vote and comment now we use the mouse and keyboard. Going to or having an option to keyboard vote would, IMO, keep me focused on the photograph while I vote.

Ok then it could be set up this way
1. Put in score [10] Press enter
2. Cursor is now in the comment box. Put in your comment or not, Press enter and it will go to the next photo.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2.

Not lazy just mainstreaming. The last thing I am is lazy, I contribute to this site more than some. It just a good way of voting for those of us that don't have to look down at the keyboard to type or vote keeping your eyes on the picture. If you can devote an extra second or two viewing the image it may change your vote one way or the other.

Or just use the 0 key for 10

Surely it's just as easy to
1.click comment box
2.enter comment
3.click score

it's a few less finger movements :)

So, if I were a troll, I could just keep hitting the bottom row? Sounds good to me :-P

Last time I checked, I didn't have to look at my mouse to click the left mouse button.

I'm used to data entry and first pass is 4, 5, or 6 75% of the time, usually by keyboard.

yup yup, for those of us who regularly use the ENTIRE keyboard, the 10-key area is a huge asset and something we can use without looking or scrolling or clicking, keyboarding is easier on the wrists than mousing.....I'd be up for keyboard shortcuts all over this site. Unfortunately, we keyboarders are in the vast minority so its still not very web-friendly as a whole.

Edit-I type ~80wpm and use shortcuts to save myself hours a day in workflow

You are right but that pointer distracts me while getting a feel of the image, back and forth.

Exactly, I could vote in blocks a lot quicker by only having to press the 4-5-6 key and hitting enter, enter. Then go back and adjust my votes. Possibly giving me time to comment.

Some of us use a laptop and it does not have a keypad so how would that help?

Most laptops have a keypad you have to activate it by pressing a particular button. Each laptop is different. If not you can use the number keys above the letters.

Yes I realize that .. but I don't want to do that because then I have to remember to deactivate it. I think no matter what changes are made there will always be the trolls that figure out a way around it.

Ha! Me too. Oh, except that mine is attached to a USB keyboard ever since carpal tunnel and tendonitis -- caused by laptops. HA! I love IT work...

Carpal tunnel is no fun is it? Begins with a slight tingle in the palm and or thumb if left untreated will travel up the arm and into the chest nerves. Also can cause ulnar nerve syndrome at the elbow. Of the two I would have to say the ulnar is worse. It's like you are hitting your funny bone every day.

None of the chest nerves here, but I tend to rest on my elbows at times and feel the ulnar nerve twinging. I take doses of Sodium Naproxen at times (Dr. recommended, although leads to high blood pressure...) and breaks throughout the day. Ah to be 20-something again and code all day.

Heck if we are looking at changing it why not go all the way and use voice recognition, Just think, lean back against the back of the chair, feet up, arms folded and say your vote and then dictate a short comment, Ya, I'm in for that ;)
02/09/2006 01:25:40 AM · #24
Typical suggestion thread: some like the idea, but others feel compelled to chime in with:
- If it doesn't help me why should it be done?
- If we're gonna do that, why don't they just go ALL the way and...

It's always ALL or NOTHING or "What about ME?"

...sorry, I'm grumpy.

With such large challenges to vote on, I want to revive this suggestion.

I sure would like to be able to make a pass through the entries and assign values just by pressing a key. I realize from reading below that 10 is a bit of an issue there, but 0 could be used to enter a 10.

I don't want to press enter afterwards either. I'll go back in a second pass and add comments. I just want to be able to make it through voting! Clicking an on screen number is too slow. (And yes, I can still spend time looking at the photo, even if I want to enter the score quickly!)

Question: Can anyone think of a way to add this via an add-on approach (i.e., without Langdon having to code it?)
