This year is/was my wife's turn to pick a family vacation destination. She is stumped, so I get to submit a list and she'll pick from that.

So i'd like some ideas from you folks out there - here is some info:

Driving only, within about 500-600 miles of Pittsburgh, PA.

Me: i like photography (duh), trains, history (battelfields, museums, etc). I get bored at the beach.
Wife: likes the beach, antiques, houses, writing, not super keen on history but has enjoyed Colonial Williamsburg and Greenfield Village. NOT a museum fan.
Kids: William age 5, Evelyn age 2 1/2. She walks well(did greenfield village for 7 hours last july in 90+ heat) so that is not a problem. She likes water, my son only does indoor pools LOL

Sooo, amusement parks are probably out for a few more years (disney, six flags, cedar point, etc) as my wife doesn't ride them, my daughter is too young and my son is limited to too few rides (short for his age too)

We aren't much into night life, and with the kids and no babysitter that won't work anyway.

Thoughts we've tossed around:
Upstate NY (not sure what's there) and possibly new england (she has a friend from college in Boston)
NYC - we've never been there
Chicago - almost went last year
Nashville or something Southern
Biltmore Estate
Skyline Drive

Places NOT to go (been there): Colonial Williamsburg, Wash DC, Gettysburg/Antietam, Niagara Falls, Steamtown, Lancaster PA (amish), atlantic city.

Savannah, GA: Lots of history and a nice beach (Tybee Island)

Cumberland Island & St. Mary's GA:***very cool place*** Again, history and a beach.

St. Augustine, FL: Farther than you want to go, but worth the trip. The most history and even better beaches.

Cape Cod comes to mind, sir. Plenty of photo ops for you, if you leave the others at the beach. There's a Cape Cod old-timey dinner train you can ride one night; I'll babysit the kids for you while you do it :-) Lots of history on Cape Cod, but of the smallish, local-musueum variety.

For the wife, oodles of beaches. Plenty of well-preserved old towns for that "New England" feel. The Boston friends can ride on a ferry to provincetown and you can meet them there for a day-trip.

On the way to, or from, you can stop off in New Bedford and see a great, well-preserved Whaling Museum/site, part of the National Park service. YOu can take a ferry to Nantucket Town and see a REALLY well-preserved, "living" old New England town. You can ferry to Martha's Vineyard too.

Chicago is good. It has beaches and hotels with indoor pools. Lots of marinas with nice lake shots. A huge indoor aquarium and museums. The big fountain from "Married with Children" and Navy pier is nice also. Lots of things to do and photograph in Chi-town.

Both sound interesting. and one comes with a babysitter LOL

Are you This Old House fans or somehting? Didn't they do a house on cape Cod and one in Savannah?

Both locations are 700 miles from here...and both good ideas! Thanks!

Anymore?

Newfoundland? Sounds great, but a bit far this time around. We probably should do a 2 weeker this year, but are looking at a week, tops. My wife gets 3 weeks vacation, but just got a promotion and gets weird even taking a long weekend, so even getting her to agree to a full week has been difficult. My photography biz is slow enough that i can take time off and not really cost myself anything (too bad, huh?

What's the Outer Banks like (N.C.)

You mentioned Nashville....how about Dollywood? Suppose to be a great little amusement Park....but it has shows and stuff. Plus you're right in the middle of the smokies.

I'll agree with Bear on this one...I think the Cape Cod/Nantucket trip would be sweet.
The kids will love the Ferry ride to Nantucket, the history, the beaches, the foooood, the architecture, the cobblestone, the lighthouse, etc. - rent some bikes and ride around the island. Or a jeep and take it on the beach...

Or, if you want to drive a little further North, Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor Maine is always a crowd pleaser. (At least the crowd that I roll with).

Wisconsin?

Spend a day in Milwaukee, decent art museum right on the lake, great zoo, surprisingly cool beach, very nice downtown area.
Spend a day at Devils Lake and Circus World Museum near Baraboo. Great little lake with very rare geological features to hike climb and photograph. Approach Devils Lake from the north and take the free ferry across the Wisconsin River. Kids will love the Circus World Museum and there are plenty of photo ops there as well.
Spend a day or two at Wisconsin Dells right near by Baraboo. The Wisconsin River is beautiful and full of interesting rock formations in this area. Take a duck tour (WWII amphibious vehicle) of the river. The kids will love it and you’ll get plenty of great photo ops. Plenty of water parks, go carts and tourist stuff around the Dells as well.

Take Bear_music up on his offer. The Cape has excellent beaches with dunes and lighthouses and boardwalks and all that ( and two sides, to boot - the Atlantic side and the Bay side depending on how you like your water ); there are bicycling and hiking paths, wonderful little towns with lots of small shops, and depending on when you go, you might consider taking a whale watching boat ride.
Make a day trip ( or two ) into Boston. They have an absolutely TERRIFIC interactive, hands-on childrens museum the the kids will absolutely love, and just up the street is an equally outstanding aquarium. Plus, of course, loads of historical sites ( have lunch and do some shopping at Faneuil hall ) - and if you time it right, you can take in a Red-Sox game in what I consider to be the fan-friendliest baseball stadium in the world. If you care to, you can also make arrangements to visit the Wood's Hole Oceanographic Institution, Plymouth Rock, Salem, and lot's of other "neat" places.

Have a great time.

Along the Delaware River between Pennsylvania and New Jersey - Washington's Crossing, New Hope, PA, Lambertville, NJ - and further north into the Delaware Gap area - lovely hikes/waterfalls.

How about Toronto??? We got lots here for kids and women and a lot of stuff to shoot. Examples are: Canada's Wonderland, Canadian National Exhibition, Ontario Place, Fort York, CN Tower, and the list goes on.
