Hi guys,

my CRT monitor is about to die. So, I'm looking for a replacement... and I'm looking the LCD way. I never really liked LCD monitors for photo editing. But maybe new LCD's are as good as CRTs with new technological advencements?

I was looking in the range of the Apple 23inch monitor LCD. I never tried it though. Which is why I'm turning to you!

Any advice on a TOP NOTCH LCD monitor for photo editing? I want something that compares to CRT.

Thanks.

I've been using the Gateway 21" for about 4 weeks now and I highly recommend it. For photo processing, it is great:
- 1000:1 contrast
- total control of brightness, contrast, colour and gamma when you do calibrating
- screen real estate for days and the monitor pivots 90 degrees which is great whe working on a portrait layout photo.
- DVI input

The list goes on.... check out the web site.

I do not regret my decision to buy this monitor.

That Gateway is a mighty nice rig...I saw it in Costco the other day and was quite impressed with the quality...

but this 24" Wide 1920x1200 sitting right next to it moved me a little more. But it costs a couple bucks more as well. Doesn't Rotate like the Gateway however.

Viewable Image Size: 24"
Optimal Preset Resolution: WUXGA 1920 x 1200 @ 60Hz1
Pixel Pitch: 0.270 mm
Brightness: 500 nits
Contrast Ratio: 1000:1
Viewing Angle: 89° H/89° V
Response time: Typical 12ms grey to grey
P-I-P (Picture-in-Picture) Support2

Input Connection:

Analog RGB
Digital DVI-D3
S-Video
Composite and Component
USB 2.0 Ports, 4 each ( 2 located on side, 2 in back)

The Apple 23 is top rated as well as the Sony Premium Pro 23" but it runs over $1,500 US. Dell makes two 20" monitors in the $500-600 range that are highly rated, the 2001 and the 2005.

Dell's 24 inch flatscreen has great reviews, and is on sale right now for $799. (edit: same as above mentioned by awpollard, oops) It has built-in card readers which is cool. Or for top-notch, check out their 30 inch (drool).

I just ordered this Dell 20.1 inch widescreen and should have it tomorrow. This one is on sale for $396 right now. You could stack 2 of these side by side for the cost of the 4 inch bigger one.

Supposedly the actual lcd's are the same as the Mac's, which are both made by Lucerne Graphics. I also bought an instant coupon off Ebay for 2 bucks that saved me another 35 bucks (well, 33 bucks after the price of coupon). It was emailed to me as soon as I paid for it. Good luck!

if you want pro quality then it's the apple 23" or 30", the Dell 24" has the same matrix as the apple so it's a good choice to, then it's the top of the line.. eizo but it costs 3x more than the apple ;)

what about the lacie or benQ lcd's

I recently bought the Apple 20" Cinema display and and its by far the best computer monitor I´ve ever had.....
I thought the price diffrent between the 20" and the 23" was just too big to justify buying the 23"

Good luck on your choice:D

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions.

I have read on other sites that the DELL display is overly BRIGHT for photo editing. Any one here using the DELL 24" on a daily basis for professional photo editing?

Also, anyone here had first hand experience both with the APPLE Cinema 23" and the DELL 24" ? I'd like to have comments on the two display, again, for professional photo editing.

Also, I know nothing of EIZO... but it's the second time I hear about it. What makes it so good compared to the APPLE or DELL display?

Thanks everyone!

I work with both CRT and LCD (Apple Cinema Display) and value the CRT as much as many pros who continue to use them. CRTs may represent an older technology but not necessarily a crappy experience.

As a matter of fact, the only thing that would motivate me to purchase another LCD monitor is screen size.

Eizo for the best, Lacie 321 for the second best.

I agree with BrennanOB.

I used to work for spectra photo and they have LaCies because they calibrate easily. And give you great color reproduction. They also come with the display hood to prevent ambient light, like a lens hood might.

Taken from the website:

Due to the unprecedented CRT-grade gamut of its top-of-the-line SA-Superfine TFT panel and its embedded 10-bit gamma correction, the 21.3" LaCie 321 LCD Monitor displays colors so vibrant and accurate, it is wooing graphics professionals toward the LCD revolution.

View Area : 21.3"/54 cm
Form Factor : 4:3
Maximum Resolution : 1600x1200 (UXGA)
Dot Pitch : 0.27 mm
Color Gamut : 100% EBU; 72% NTSC
Gamma Correction : 10-bit LUT
Luminance : 250 cd/m2
Contrast Ratio : 500:1
Response Time : 20ms
Viewing Angles : 176° horizontally and vertically
Connections : 1xVGA D-Sub, 1xDVI-D, 1xDVI-I
Horizontal Scan : 31.5-91.9 kHz
Vertical Scan : 50-85 Hz
Communications : DDC/CI

Lacie has always been regarded as top notch. B&H Photo sells them.

Good luck

Thanks again everyone. I've narrowed down my search to the LaCie 321. I've read a few reviews, and I think that is the best monitor out there for photography, except maybe the EIZO but it is slightly better and I don't think it justifies the big price gap.

tomswardware.com has great reviews for these monitors. Lacie 321 came highly recommended.

Cheers!

yup the Lacie is probably a very good choice, but it only comes with 1600x1200 native resolution doesnt it?
After using a widescreen resolution monitor for a while I´m thinking its alot more natural point of view working with Photoshop for example and both the 23" Apple and 24" Dell come with higher resolutions.

then on the other hand I´m not on a professional level with my photography ........

i don't touch reviews from tomshardware..

interesting read

I have the Dell 20.5" widescreen and if you take the time to calibrate it I think it's a great buy. Especially since it has the same LCD as the Apple 21" but has more features (DVI, VGA, S-video and analog video inputs and USB ports) at less than half the price. Although that Dell logo looks not so good compared to my Mac hardware.

I don't think you can go wrong with the LaCie though. For me, I just could not justify the expense.

You want a Brightside HDR display, a bargain at a mere $49K. :)
