We've got a couple of these guys that appeared after building a retaining wall out of railroad ties in September. Anybody have a clue as to what they are? Although the one shown here is smaller, the "papa" is at least 10" long from his head to the end of his tail. I was surprised at how large they get and haven't seen them in the area before (neither has my father and he's lived in rural Virginia all his life).

Please forgive the crudity of the photograph - it is for identification purposes only! :-)

I wouldn't say he nailed the identification. I'm pretty sure that is a Southwestern Fence Lizard !

Well, he's certainly residing in Southwestern Virginia. ;-) Maybe he didn't take geography...

Oh I'd love to see one. The daughter would love that. Have never seen any in this part of VA though. We love reptiles!

Yep...Eastern Fence Lizard (Sceloporus undulatus) it is...

They can be found throughout all of Virginia...
