Pardon my ignorance, but would most voters consider an entry outside in sunlight as DNMC although the sun is a single source of light?

I had a look at the last single light source challenge and it looks like most of the top 20 are done with a clarely identifiable single source of light - indoors.

Well the description does say "artificial light source"...

Use a single, artificial light source to dramatically light the subject of your choice.

Do not use the sun as your light source if you want to have half a chance.

You might get away with sunlight through a window, but only if it doesn't look like sunlight :-)

You are so right. My apologies for being a bit fast. Next time i'll try to read all the challenge details - even if it's an entire sentence ;)

Kudos to the descriptor for specifying. I too am learning to read more carefully.. even check the forums..

Sadly, the challenge topic often doesn't matter a great deal.

That last one also called for a single, ARTIFICIAL light source, yet in 4th place was a photo using sunlight through a window.

I think it's good that these two pictures ended up right next to each other - reflects some consistency in the voting...

Hehe - you know... I told my wife that if I win a blue ribbon, I'll print it out in colour, cut it out with scissors and pin it to my shirts for an entire week for everyone to see ;)

She responded something about men in white coats coming to get me...

say you have one light source on one side but you used a reflector on the other side, would that pass the challenge?

thanks

A reflector is IMO also an artificial light source - hence two lightsources.

That was mine and I realized my mistake after I entered it. I was going to self DQ but was told by SC that not meeting the challenge description was not grounds for a DQ. This was discussed in the forums after the challenge results. I am not the first person to place high by not meeting the challenge description and I am sure I won't be the last.

Like this blue ribbon winner by Zoomdak in the Serendipity challenge. It's a beautiful image but does not have anything to do with serendipity.

How so? It's not generating any light itself. That's like saying that the light tent is a second light source, or the wall. Everything you can see is technically reflecting light or you wouldn't see it.

However, I would caution anyone using a reflector that if it looks like more than one light source, it doesn't matter what the truth is. Perception perception perception!

was wondering the same thing about reflectors.. do they count as second light source? We've got 2 conflicting answers. I was thinking it is NOT considered a second source.. but I'd like clarification if possible.

So... if you use a studio light with an umbrella mounted on it you are actually only using the reflector and not the light at all. I would still consider the unbrella to be the light source. Then again... It would not be considered two light sources... I'm confused LOL

But Rebecca is right. What's most important in order to not risk DNMC comments is that the light looks like it only comes from one light source.

Perception is reality

I don't understand how you can consider a reflector, mirror, umbrella ect a light source. The key word being source. The reflectors and mirrors are only reflecting the light from the source. The source of the light is where the light is being generated from.

sorry engineer talk.

straight from the dictionary

Source:

1)The point at which something springs into being or from which it derives or is obtained.

2)The point of origin, such as a spring, of a stream or river.

3)One that causes, creates, or initiates; a maker.

By the way, I'm glad this thread is actually hashing this out before voting. I just hope everyone who votes actually reads the thread.

just guessing... but if it looks like 2 sources (even if you used a reflector etc), some people are going to vote it down. And conversely, i'm guessing if you used 2 sources but made it look like one (don't ask how lol), it'd be voted upon favourably... photography's a kind of art, what the viewer sees is what they base their decision on, not how you set the shot up...

It's easy to make two light sources look like one... one example is adding a kicker light to the main light. Usually this is a second light that shines on a object from the same location or direction as the main light so that you don't get a second shadow. Some people use kickers to boost the light level or add a bit more depth to their main light.
