Thought I might pass on this deal I found at Wally World's website

Seagate 4GB Compact Flash Hard Drive for $79.84

Edit to move these links up top:

I would rather spend 2x the price of anything and NOT buy it at walmart. They are the most evil corporation I know.

I would prefer to shop at NewEgg or checking out edealinfo is also helpful.

Microdrives can and do crash. Are you willing to risk 4gb of photos?

Thanks fotomann, I need to pick one up, though for my computer not my camera. Nice price...

All media dies, it's just a matter of time.

[edit: except possibly News Corp.]

(Microdrives are more susceptible to damange in adverse environments, and are slower, than flash memory. I'd be willing to believe that they'd last longer than flash in terms of constant rewrites in a stationary camera in an enviromentally-controlled studio, however, but I haven't looked into it because it probably doesn't matter.)

coolness, thanks Mr Fotomann

and for those who fear the evilness of Walmart I picked up a 4GB Cf card (not a microdrive) for $87 at newegg:

I have a Seagate 4GB card and I use it when I don't need fast writing disks usually for night shots, family, etc. It's very reliable and cheap ;)

Speed is an issue though as it doesn't even pale to compare with my faster cards but hey, for under $80, it's a good deal ;)

If the devil can save me $100 here and there, I'll buy from him, too. WalMart saves me a great deal of money each year, as well as provides hundreds of jobs to the communities they enter. Besides, Starbucks is where evil originates, right?

i wouldn't recommend using microdrives for photography.

i lost about 2 GB's of sightseeing photographs while in egypt during my winter vacation when my microdrive crashed.

spend more and go for CF. i sure wish i had.

the most common cause for micodrive crashes are poor storage. if you treat microdrives like CF cards, then yes, they will fail since they have miniature moving parts inside. However, I've kept my microdrive in a secure case with neoprene padding such as this and have had gardly any issues with it ;)

definitely, but the amount of protection a microdrive needs in order to guarantee prevention of failure is unreasonable. a camera gets jolted around, plain and simple, and a spinning drive is very vulnerable inside a camera being carried around. its just not worth the risk.

If ya don't like WalMart then try CompUSA, advertised for same price, less than $80.

I use my Hitachi 4Gb for everything. I don't need the fast sport save, only a couple of times have I had to wait longer than I wanted too. I have both but the 4 GB over a 1Gb CF is great, shooting 500 RAW and not worrying about filling up is perfect. Oh ya...I dropped a 2Gb real hard and called the manufacturer. No questions, they replaced it with a 4Gb. If you treat them as you do your camera no problems.

Just a side note: My wife left a CD with over 100 photos on it in a shirt and it went through a complete wash, rinse and spin cycle with hot water in the washer. Found it before the dry cycle. It still worked perfectly, amazing at how clean the pitures were ... bleach hummmmmm.

Really, take a look at the link I posted earlier - it's NOT a microdrive - 4gb and only $10 more,

If you're worried about the fragileness of microdrives just spend the extra $10 and get the solid state.

Ooooh, even more yummy. I haven't bought anything yet, but that deal sounds good!

I have a 4GB microdrive and a 2GB CF card. Neither have failed or had problems. I've had them about 18 months now. I mostly use my microdrive for long days (capacity). I've never treated either of them differently. My camera is always treated well.

Any item can fail at any time - camera, lens, microdrive or CF card. Treat them with respect and they'll last.

My microdrive (at the time) was much cheaper than that same capacity CF.

:-( Hard to find someplace (cheap and reliable brand) that sells or ships to Canada. I am looking for a 2 or 4 CF card. Trying to learn to shoot raw and it is eating up chip space.

(editted for spelling)
