I have decided to come to NYC over the 4th of July and wanted to get some of my questions answered as this will be my first time there.

1st - I have looked through previouse threads and found some great info about where to shoot. However, I would like to nail down some specifics about where to set up...In your opinion, where is the best place to set up for a skyline shot of the city (night and day)? How about the Brooklyn Bridge?

2nd - How crazy will it be on the 4th? Where is the fireworks display? I would like to get the fireworks with the city's skyline in the background...is this possible? Should I be at my shooting location early or do I have time to mess around in the city beforehand?

3rd - Will I need to arrange for photo releases for any of the buildings in NYC? I am a little unsure of the laws regarding buildings, but I just wanted to see if any of the locals knew.

4th - What part of Central Park is fit for some good landscapes? People?

5th - I will be carrying a good amount of equipement in my backpack...what should I avoid? Buses, cabs, subways? What areas are "rough" and warrants either extreme caution or complete avoidance?

6th - Will I encounter trouble getting my equipment passed security at the various atractions...Statue of Liberty, Rockafeller Center, St. Patrick's, Empire State, I can imagine the art museum will not let a camera in but how about other museums? how about a tripod?

7th - I will be dedicating a couple of days to shooting around the city and would really appreciate a local DPCer meeting up with me for a couple of hours to show me the real "money making" locations. Any takers?

1st - IMO Weehawken New Jersey at night. Take a Ferry there from the Midtown West Pier (don't know the street). Roosevelt Island in the early morning as the sun is rising(until maybe 9:30AM) would make for a niced stitched Pano.

2nd - It will be very crazy around The 4th. If I were to shoot Fireworks/People I would go to Avenue B at around 14th Street in Manhattan which, looking uptown gives you a nice view of the show...not perfect mind you...but a very, very New York scene. Not touristy at all.

4th - All of Central Park is awesome...you can't go wrong anywhere but for landscapes I'd walk around The Lake (around 72nd-86th st)

5th - The city is very safe but avoid The Bronx. It's not a bad place but it ain't that great either...

6th - I've found that many tourist spots will not allow you to use your tripod, you can carry it but you can'tuse it. However mini-tripods seems to be ok.

7th - I will show you money making locations...if you show me the money. Just kidding! PM me...if I am around or can be of any additional helplet me know.

Have Fun!!!

1: agree with pawdrix re jersey for skyline view. another thought is brooklyn heights...walk across the brooklyn bridge, walk toward the water (back under the bridge...) get a pizza at grimaldi's and then continue toward the landing for great views and ice cream.

2. consider the fireworks thrown at astoria park if you are here on thursday (the 29th), great scene, great show and excellent manhattan (upper) backdrop. also, consider going up to the "top of the beekman" on 49th and first avenue, outdoor dining and amazing southern view...beekman tower

3. i've never gotten photo releases tho' i'm told that the chrysler building is touchy

4. also consider the conservatory garden (a formal european style beauty) at 103rd and 5th avenue. from there go north toward the harlem meer. lovely and fun for photographing people.

5. all transportation is safe but if you leave something behind, consider it a gonner.

6. neither met nor moma have problems with cameras.

7. out of town myself but there are a lot of fine dpcers in the area...

have a great time. i'll be watching for your entries!

I'm thinking of going there over this weekend. Will the July 4th festivities/crazyness start that early, or will the city be it's normal self over Sat and Sun (1-2)?

Damn... Looks like an impromptu NYC GTG over the holiday weekend. Too bad my mother is coming to Philly for the weekend or I'd come up in a heartbeat.

You don't need an official GTG to come to NY. Just start a new tread, I'm sure you will get some New Yorkers who wants to go out and shoot.

the city will begin to get crazy sunday especially during the fireworks or even hours before the fireworks start. People start gathering to see them really early.

There's that, but I liked the group dynamic of the April GTG, and thanks to circumstances I missed GTG2 and the WDC Night GTG. Such is life, eh?
