Well I bought my first decent digital camera and took my first pictures with it today. I'm no star like you guys, but I've been admiring your work for the last couple days and trying to learn by reading and and looking through the galleries...
I own a motorcycle custom paint shop, but none of those skills seem to tranfer quickly or easily over to photography for at least me so far. Here is the first picture I actual processed. I was pretty unhappy with the turnout of the sign as far as clarity, but I thought the BW contras with the color sign would make up for that...
Any tips on my picture and any advice on how to pick or find a subject/object to shoot would be great (or just links with the info).

EDIT: I've updated the photo to the one where I croped it. Is that better?
EDIT 2: Thanks for the feed back and the couple of Emails that I got... I've learned a bit. The more I look at my first picture the more I understand why it is a bad one... Can't wait till I get free time to play again...

Welcome to DPC Russell - this is the place to learn all about taking photos. there are some amazingly talented folk here, enjoy.
As for your photo i think it would be better if you had croped out the log in the foreground.

Can you explain why? I actualy croped the picture like you suggested but I couldn't decide what was better and just posted this one on a coin toss...
Does the log draw focus away from the focus point of the picture?
I can't wait till I get good enough to post decent pictures worth comentary becuase I learn fast with feedback, both negitive & positive. |

if the sign is what you would like to be the main focal point in the
photo, try taking the picture with that in mind.
make the viewer the look at the sign, use the background for framing,
or adjust the angle so the background isnt overwhelming, and adds to the overall objective.
looks like you might need to get closer

Hi Russell - i just think that the log leads the eye away from the main focus of the picture - the sign - also it just seemed to clutter up the foreground too much. I prefer the crop myself but no doubt others might not.

This is the first one I've done that I thought was decent...
I'm hoping to get a chance to take pictures of some buildings in the near future... I attend an amazing Catholic Church that looks ripe for being shot.

I entered my first photo in the DPC Macro. It's not doing that well, but I sure am having fun and I am really insprired to take more and experiment. I certainly didn't expect to do well. There are some people who have some real talent and it shows. Russell, I think you'll know when you have the one you want. I've taken some with my new digital, and I really like them even if no one else does. So far I am getting good input. This whole experience so far has been really positive for me and I'm sure it will be for you too.

Welcome, Russell2566! Posted a comment on your floral. On the tree and sign. I see two separate photos. The tree is very interesting and would make one shot by itself. As said before, focus closer on the sign with the tree in the background for the second shot.
