October GTG in South Central Wisconsin:

Back in July (in this thread), I had suggested October 14-15 as the best weekend to do it, and that still looks like the optimal time for fall colors to me (checked with WI Dept of Tourism on 9/21/06 and they confirmed that weekend as close to peak colors).

We'll be meeting in the parking area by the south boat landing of the Merrimac Ferry across the Wisconsin River. roughly centered on this google map.

Meeting time: TBA
Plan for the day: Visit Lodi, shoot WI river/ferry area, visit Devils Lake State Park

If interested, reply to the thread and send me a PM.

Sign up here if you're definitely in or if you want updates. I'll edit this message to include a list of participants, and suggested locations.

Provisional attendees:

strangeghost

Still waiting to hear from ironworker and others.

My schedule looks pretty touchy for October but I think i can shuffle a few things providing I do it soon. Baraboo is a photo op i have been looking forward to even north of there a little ways up by Camp Douglas area is awesome. But Id be happy to walk around in Downtown Madison for a few hours with all of you snapping some photos etc...

I took a quick look at some event schedules and did not see anything that stood out for Oct 14-15, but here are some things I found.

This one would not apply to October, but may be of interest.

Milwaukee Native American Event

there must be 100s of fall festivals in all the little towns around wisconsin during the colors season. prehaps the door county area would have more to offer or LaCrosse when is October Fest up there?

I am going to be in Sheboygan the following week.

Depending on where I'm interested ... if you cheesies will allow a yooper to attend :)
09/04/2006 08:06:39 PM · #9
I got no problems with a yooper showing up. But wow you will have some drive time if it is held down in the central or southern part of the state. I prob would have about 3 hours at most depending on where.

another nice place this time of year is Wausau area or Wis Rapids.

I wonder if this won't get moved up a bit. Trees around Chicago are already starting to turn. Fall is coming early this year it seems.

There are always a few trees that appear to turn early, but peak time in N. Illinois, S Wis is usually around mid-October. I hate to make the date float though, makes it really tough for people to plan.

i seen one tree turning orange yesterday it was the only one amoungst a bunch of green so it really stood out. I reckon it is only a matter of a couple of weeks and it will be time to dig the rakes and leaf blower out.

edit to say, that tree was over by Grafton.

Is the target place still Baraboo?
09/14/2006 12:03:31 PM · #20
Sorry Trump, never saw your post until I came to BUMP the thread today. Yes, I'm still planning for Devil's Lake Park near Baraboo unless somebody proposes (and everyone accepts) an alternative. Most of our respondees are from the southern half of the state, so that makes sense.

Every else, let me know.

sounds like a fun photo op I still haven't resolved some scheduling issues. But I still think I can pull it off.

Strangeghost, Your talking about this place right?

If ya's go to Devils Lake I might just show up also. I've been wanting to check out their campgrounds anyway.

Yes Bugz, that's the place. The pics in that link give a little flavor for the potential for fall colors. The park has wonderful trails for great picturesque hikes to the tops of the bluffs, etc.

Nsti, I added you to the probable list.

Keep the thread alive!

Can not attend weekend of Oct. 14th. 7th and 21st would be the only weekend dates I have available.
09/19/2006 09:06:51 PM · #25
It's been suggested that we look at moving this up a week because the weekend of Oct 14th/15th might be too late in light of recent cool weather. I contact the WI Dept. of Tourism today and they're still predicting the middle of Oct for the peak of fall colors.

What does everyone think? Go earlier or stick with the proposed weekend of 14-15. Anybody have a lead on good predictions for peak colors?
