Before I dive into my request for advice, I feel I should explain my situation some.

I am a writer for outdoor magazines and became a "photographer" as a result of needing photos to go with my articles. The photo stuff is taking off and now I find myself getting photo spread assignments for magazines.

So here is the quandary, I just returned from a two day photo shot of an off-road event. I've gone through and selected the photos for the magazine and posted the "seconds” on eventpictures.com for the participants to purchase if they want. I do this more of a way to get the photos to them than I do to make money off the shoot. One of the drivers/owners I took plenty of photos of wants to purchase several of the photos for commercial use.

I don't have a contract for that type of sale nor do I have a clue how much to sell the photos for.

Can you help me out with some advice?

Just found the site and I hope to learn a bunch from you all. Please be patient with me. After all I'm just a writer turned photographer

I haven't used this, I'm still in the learning/microstock stage of my photo career, but it should give you a ballpark of what to ask. :)

First, are you allowed to sell the photos for that purpose? Most events are very controlling over what anyone is allowed to do with the photos, even thought it is a 'public' event - NASCAR and the NFL come to mind very quickly. If they issued a press pass then check the small print with it - you get editorial usage ONLY and cannot sell the pics for commercial purposes.

Were you freelance or contracted with the publications? If contracted you may owe them a percentage (or even all) of the sale.

As to the price, there is a calculator someplace on the web that does this - it hinges on what rights they want and their intended usage is - a natiaonl magazine ad or t-shirt sales?
