What if the winners of the challenges were allowed to choose the focus of the new challenges?

Obviously they couldn't choose the one immediately following the challenge they won, but they could choose the one after that. For example, Franziska Lang won the "Ground Up" challenge (ended May 5) so she could choose the subject two weeks away (start on May 13). It wouldn't be hard to implement and after a couple of weeks it would be automatic. This change could set goals for people and reward them with results.

Any input on this?

The trouble with the winners choosing the challenge is there would be many folks thinking that would benefit them too greatly...playing to their strengths.

I really like the fact that this site gives absolutely no reward for winning...even something minor like a challenge choice. somehow it makes the site feel even more like a student/learning site.

Besides..Personally..I really hate awards for art anyway.

It seems us humans have a hard time appreciating art unless we attach a trophy to it..:-)

I think it is a great idea. Just one thing. If the same people kept winning week after week then they would have a better chance at winning again because they are picking and thinking about it for 1 week more then us. Just a thought.

Just don't make the person choosing the challenge justify the voting, comments, and interpretations afterwards!!! ;o) Seriously, it's fun for me to have to think about something that I would've not considered taking photos of, or try a totally different angle, and that would be lost for the winner. Anyone having good ideas can always post them here and Drew and Langdon may just use them in one of the challenges (isn't that what happened with the advertising one?).

I think we already have a forum for posting challenge ideas which is a great thing. Anything that gets people more involved in thinking about photography is a good thing.

I was just afraid that the more "prizes" we put up the more people only focus on winning instead of creating..not that choosing the challenge is a big thing or not..just afraid of the slippery slope effect.

BTW gr8photos...I thought your orange symphony was simply spectacular. I love tight macro shots that allow the picture to take on a shape beyond itself.

I agree with hokie on this one. Langdon and Drew take our suggestions into consideration as it is. If we let the winners choose the topic you may see more repeat winners due to the fact that they will choose something that they are already good at and they would have more time to plan out their entries.

Thanks, hokie, that's very kind of you. :o)
