I voted on the last challenge without using the dreaded '5'. The reason I think this helps is that it focuses my opinion: do I like it or not? If I find myself lunging for the '5' I haven't really given enough consideration to the image to actually form an opinion.

A '5' vote is vague and is almost, but not quite, as bad as those people who ring in to a phone poll to say 'I Don't Know'.

PS. I know that the average is 5.5 so I should really try to stop using '6' too!

You aren't alone using the 5 and 6. You got a point to. When the photo is ok but not an attention grabber you do tend to go for that 5 or 6.

Any photo will get six or lower from me unless it IS an attention grabber. An effective photo should catch your eye right away. It has to be visually interesting right from the get-go and has to show some degree of professionalism. The grabber has to be there and the photo has to be nearly flawless for anything higher than a 7. If not, the ho-hum factor takes over and thus the photo will get a six or lower.

Just look at the top 20's for every challenge and you'll see what I'm talking about.

That's how I vote. You don't have to like it and if you don't, well don't sweat it cuz I can only place one vote per picture per challenge anyway.

A true dpchallenger only votes 1 or 10.

A 5 vote is the hobgoblin of small minds.

This explains why I'm getting the "4's".

I think it is a very small mind that can only comprehend a 1 or a 10 and nothing in between. The world is not Black and White, there is a lot of gray in between, about 15 variations....perhaps you better check
the monitor of your mind.

For me, 5 and 6 are very important because in my scheme of voting they are the watershed scores. If my immediate gut reaction is I don't like the picture, then it gets a 5 or below...if I like it, a 6 or above. Then once I put a picture into one of those categories (the 1-5 or 6-10 categories) I will then use a 5 point scoring system to rate the photograph. 5.5 would be the middle ground, but that doesn't exist in the DPC scheme of things, so there really is no middle ground, you have to decide, do I like it, or not.

There are many times when I'm totally undecided about a photo. I just don't know what the heck to make of it. Usually, it's when I don't understand what the photographer is trying to communicate or what the was intended by shooting a subject a certain way. In those instances, I cop out and score a 5 or 6. I guess I should really just pass over it.

I was thinking of proposing new scoring schemes:
1) a zero to 10 rating scheme in which then 5 would be the scoring mean, or
2) a zero to 100 scoring scheme, which may give scorers a lot of leeway in their scoring, but would also complicate matters.
