I think it would be a nice option to select which photos we think should win ribbons when voting. Not only would this allow voters to decide which photos are their actual favorites in each challenge, but it would provide a nice additional statistic for photographers to track. Even if a person hasn't won a ribbon, they might be able to say that they have been selected by 50 voters as deserving a ribbon. Kinda nice. :-) This doesn't have to be required, but it might be a good option.

What do you think?

Well your statistical favs show you what you voted highest on (10's).

What would be really funny if say a mid-placing image got more "ribbons" than the blue. Which is quite possible in the case of a nude :-)

How do you view your "statistical favs?"

You view them here:

And for the record, I personally think this idea would be a fun addition to the site.

Yes, statistical faves are great. I think the bigger benefit for this would be in allowing people to see that they have been selected as the best photo in certain challenges, even if they didn't win an actual (virtual) ribbon.

I think it would be abused as a joke.

I like the idea.

I like the idea, and encourage people to do it in comments

I like this idea too.
We can have more fun when voting - great !

posthumous just recently started doing this. If you check his comments made, you'll see that he awards a blue, red, and yellow ribbon in the challenges he votes in. I think it's a great idea!

I choose my ribboners by giving them 10s. I only give one or two out.

A good way to do it - but do you tell them? The recognition would probably be very much appreciated!

I agree with this thread; PErhaps a blue ribbon would count as 13, A Red as Ribbon 12, and a yellow as 11; and you could only assign these once during voting, obviously. That would be fun, assuming you had the time to view the whole field.

But it doesn't show what he's talking about. I like the idea. Wouldn't take much to implement it either.

I don't necessarily disagree with this thread, and what's proposed here has been going on, informally, for a while. But the other side of the coin could be that, if everyone feels entitled to say, this is "my" choice for ribbons, then why even have ribbons, or vote on images at all. It becomes a matter of everyone saying that their individual point of view is more important, more significant, than the collective point of view, and the ribbons here are a collective point of view, however misguided that collective point of view is in individual opinion.

Our votes are our opinions on the challenge entries after all. If the collective opinion is different than my own, so be it.

I guess this is what I'm thinking, it's allright to agree/disagree with the collective point of view and talk about your personal opinion, but to make it a sort of comparable ribbon giving thing, "these are the images I give ribbons to", just seems to water down the whole thing even more than it already is.

Anyway. It's Monday. Whatever.

I think that this would be one more thing for people to argue about. "It got more ribbons but it only got a 5.5..."

Your vote is your ribbon.

People who value collective opinion will continue to value it. In fact, if everyone gives individual ribbons, the only thing that will get watered down are the individual ribbons themselves!

I don't see the individual ribbons as being in competition with the collective ribbons. I see them as a way of showing how one photo connected with one person. And I think that's a very important, positive and productive thing to acknowledge.

It would also be a fascinating statistic. I'm curious how much the number of individual ribbons would correlate with the score.

You make a geat point. I think the OOBIE and YAPPIE being added formally to the site might be a more appropriate idea. I like the idea that a different image could have been chosen as a "ribbon" image but that does sorta make the ribbons less significant in a way.
Perhaps of a photo strikes someone as particularly exciting, different or special, they could click on it as a OOB photo (out of box).

As I said, I'm not necessarily disagreeing with the idea, I'm just trying to look at it from more than one point of view.
06/25/2007 03:40:19 PM · #24
I just changed my mind - I like this idea! Howzabout a few more sub-ribbon categories, different colors or something?
Perhaps add the "brown" ribbon too just for fun!
06/25/2007 03:42:51 PM · #25
I don't think it needs to be anythng official - just something one could point out while voting - and in fact that does already take place, if you read some of the comments. Something like "this would be my pick for the blue" perhaps. In the long run, it may be something to encourage more commenting on pictures that simply strike you in some way.
