When shooting in RAW mode you can select the quality of the JPG that is also apparently saved.

I thought, and I still interpret it that way when I read up on this on the Canon site, that would mean that I take the photo and end up with TWO copies .... The RAW file and also the JPG, in whichever quality I selected.

However, all I end up with is the RAW file, regardless of settings.

This really annoys me as often I will take a heap of photos in RAW and delete all but a few .... but withoiut a JPG I have to convert all the RAW files to see which to keep (a JPG would usually meet this need as a good starting point.

What am I doing worng, or have I just misunderstood .. and if so, what the hell does the RAW/Jpg quality cf seting mean?

The JPG is embedded in the RAW file. You have to extract it with whatever software you are using to parse the RAW file.

you can get software that'll extract the JPEG from the RAW file - so you don't have to conver //www.breezesys.com has Breeze Browser that will do this , for example.

The JPEG is embeddd in the RAW file.

From within the Canon File Viewer Utility, or better yet, BreezeBrowser (since it will extract the JPEG and make sure it has full EXIF data attached), you can extract the embedded JPEG without the (potentially) time consuming conversion of the raw data to a JPEG -- and it will do so very quickly!

As a matter of fact, if you have a shot that proof is requested on that was shot in "RAW" with a D30/D60/10D, we would much prefer that if you have BreezeBrowser, you extract the embedded JPEG and upload that as your proof.

Ah ha!

Ok, all becomes clear. I thought there should be 2 separate files.

What a pain, I admit I would prefer if they did not need the separation step as I do still need to process to see the JPG files, rather than just browse the CF card with ACDSee :(

Thanks for the link the Breeze. Not sure I'll get it though. I already purchased Capture One a while ago, which is an excellent tool, but have already stopped using it since I got PS CS anyway. Don't really want to keep spending money on tools.

As I have the above I don't even install the Canon s/w.

Looks like I might have to continue the way I have been.

I think what your trying to say is there are four quality settings on what you want a jpeg to come from raw with the fileviewer ultilty and 4 being the best quality. I don't know why you want to do jpeg until the final edit for tiff is much better to work with. Yes with CS or a plug-in you can use raw with photoshop 7.

Nope, not really trying to say that at all Bob. I am looking for a quick/dirty way to view the files and THEN work with the RAW/Tiff files on the few I want to work on.

What I would want to do ideally is be able to easily and instantly browse the 200 odd photos I might take with JPEG's, then delete the usual 197, and then start work properly on the RAW files (having deleted the unwanted 197 RAW files). If there were RAW AND JPG files stored on the compact flash as SEPARATE files I could do so instantly with ACDSee (or similar) and browse/delete most of those files in a few minutes. The JPG file isn't perfect, but it still gives a pretty good idea of if a photo might be worth keeping.

For instance, for a studio shot at present while I am setting up and getting the light right I shoot in JPG, to avoid having to waste time converting the RAW files. I then switch to RAW and do the real shoot. If I happened to get a great shot while messing around, and I've had this and not been able to get as good a shot again later) I don't have anything better than the JPG.

As it is now I have to open up every single RAW file in PS CS one by one, or automated, and then either save them as JPG's or close each as I go and delete the original RAW. It's just a cumbersom step, even with automation, that I would prefer not to have to do.

If there's an advantage to having the JPG embedded in the same file as the RAW file I have no idea what it is. As I don't use the Canon software, or Breeze, the embedded file for me is pointless.

You said you already have Capture One DSLR ("C1"); why not use it? It allows you to quickly and easily browse your raw files, and I still prefer it for converting raw files over any other tool, including Photoshop CS. ..

Raw is time consuming but it makes for the best possible image nothing is lost. I have a card reader on 2.0 usb and it takes no time to get them off the compact flash. I have a gig of ram, good graphics card and penitum 4 so when I convert them to tiff they are around 14mb but I have no trouble edited them in photoshop if I tried that with one of my other computers it's like editing in slow motion. I have been doing raw for over a year and I would never consider doing images any other way. I know on your camera you have where you can change your mind and make a jpeg into a raw but I just look at mind after I shot and if I don't like it I delete it. I make copies of every image if its in focus but who knows down the line maybe you'll like it or there will be a better way to edit it. I do have a lot of cds and dvds with back-ups.
