I have an idea for a November side challenge...

Many times there are photos that tell a great story and can stand on their own but in some instances a series of images can really elaborate on the details and make the story more interesting and memorable.

Here is an excellent example of a photo essay, this one won a Pulitzer Prize:

Deanne Fitzmaurice
- click on "Saleh- Pulitzer Prize" on the left-hand side.

I would like to propose a challenge that inspires the photo-essayist in you :)

Of course, no need to post everyday, especially with a task like this. If you're interested, just post your name here :)

--------------------------------------------

edit to add some guidelines and suggestions:

-on the subject of frequency, its whatever your personal goal is... if you would like to take the whole month to create one essay, so be it! if you'd like to aim for one essay every day in training to be in constant practice as a photo-essayist, all the power to ya.

-how many pictures = a photo essay? well, i dont know for sure... but in high school we were always instructed to write "5 paragraph essays"... so if we relate that to photo essays... how about 5+?

-where to post? a few suggestions that come to mind: BlogSpot & flickR .... and, depending on your space limitations you could always post here on dpc.

anyways, if ya have anymore questions... just throw em out there :)

Ha, what's funny is that I am actually going to be doing a photo-story of sorts for my English class this week. Joining in on this will allow me to continue the story further than I will be able to get in one week.

The reason I am even doing the photo story at school is because you keep going on about photo-stories all the time, get's stuck in your head :P

ShannonLee this sounds like loads of fun. And you gave us enough time to think about a way to approach the subject. So, sure, I'm in. Put my name down, please!

Dang it, Joe! Bali! And you didn't make it a Bay Area GTG?

Actually did one (of a chalk festival) as part of the September Walkabout side challenge. Guess I was ahead of the game (for once in my life). Admitedly not Pulitzer Prize material, like the one mentioned in the original post. On the other hand, this is a bit more cheerful.

I will try to put at least one together for November, so sign me up.

thanks for bringing that up! i think there tends to be a misconception with photojournalism that it all has to be serious and sad. i've come across many photo essays that ARE very happy, and they tend to be the kind i am most drawn too.

* here is one by Deb_S titled "The Hand Me Down Dress" ( go to website, click on "portfolio", then click on "the collection")... its really excellent!!.... also, check out "The Tribute" while you're there :)

* here's another, done by goodman titled "Bird Cage"

check em out :)

I'm in. I got sick of blurriness during the August challenge and didn't finish it, but I'll aim for one 5+ photo story per week (to be posted every Sunday in Nov., but I might practice before then.)

Is everyone up for committing to newspaper-level (who, what, when, why, where, and grammatically reasonable) captions for every photo in the stories? I'll probably cheat a little by using shots from when I do assignments for the paper, but I should get used to getting names and info without an organization's name to use as an 'excuse.'

Of course, depending on what you're doing the story on, they might not really need captions. Food for thought. It's good practice.

Mine actually relies heavily on text. I personally don't think that photo essay's have to be 100% photos. To get a point across as potently as I hope to, I will have to have photo's to bring together the text.

I am still trying to decide how I am going to present it, maybe two different ways.

Be creative. Experiment, don't let anyone just tell you what you should be doing. Take your own interpretation of what a photo-essay is, and do that.

How's everyone coming with this?

I just threw together my first one, it's of a rodeo last weekend. I really should have done more to make it have a point, it's more of a collection of still pictures than an essay. I'll be thinking about ways to do the next one better.

The layout in blogspot wasn't treating me too well, so bear with me.. you can see the content and the cutlines, so at least it works.

Here's my first essay. It's one of two. San Francisco had an Oil Spill on November 7. I was in a couple of my favorite spots on this planet today, namely the North Bay and the Marin Headlands. Here is my first essay on the North Bay.

On November 7, I happened to photograph this bit of the north bay to show off the fog pattern. The spill had happened, we just didn't know it yet... . today, when I went across the bridge to see the effects of the spill, my first greeting was this: . At approximately the same spot as before, this was the scene: . A closer look at Sausalito shows the tourist section. Looking for a place to see the waterfront in Sausalito and easy parking, I headed for the Bay Model, a scale model of the bay maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers. they have protected their boat, the Weasel . On the other side of the pier there was an oil barrier. It's pretty easy to see the oil sheen against the water. Now I see why professionals like to get those reflections shots. They are definitive..... The Oil Spill is well observed, with several helicopters hovering around... as vessels try to skip the oil from the waters.

There is more narrative on each of the images.

I then went to the Marin Headlands to see how it had fared. It's not pretty. I'll show those images in another post.

Now comes the hard one. The Marin Headlands are (were) pristine and beautiful. They form the northern part of the Golden Gate which the bridge spans. Fort Baker and Fort Cronkite were situated here and fortifications from WWII are still around, including a nicely restored NIKE base. It is possible to drive around most of the perimeter of the headlands and I did that yesterday.
Here is Pt. Bonitos, usually a lovely terminus to the Gate.....the sheen on the water tells the story. Then looking down on Rodeo Beach and the coastline north, the damage becomes evident: . Zeroing in a bit look for the yellow dots on the beach, the Cleanup Crew: . Driving down to the Beach, one of the workers, close up: (A picture much like this one was on the front page of the local paper this morning) A tractor hauls away the waste for disposal. The Park Service gives an interview to Channel 2, while Channel 5 is also there. . You can see the Cleanup Crew here against the rocks. There's an awful lot of beach to go. Are they staged here for the convenience of the Press? Behind the beach is a lovely little lagoon, home to brown pelicans, cormorants, among others as well as migrating birds. While researchers were already assessing the damage, it was a mournful sight which a picture does not interpret well. But it does close this essay:

Note regarding editing: For both essays, I resorted only to a slight crop where needed, automatic levels (for consistency) and sharpening. Nothing you see is augmented in Ps.

I'm going to give this one 'bump' in case someone happens to stumble on these essays on the San Francisco Oil Spill and how it affects the north bay.

Here's mine for this week. Tried a little bit different format this time, and finally got the code written so I can set up my portfolio with thumbnails...
