This was done on another website and I did one and found it really helped me to get out of the truck and not be embarrassed to take photos. It actually gave me a reason to stop and take photos.
I just copied his post(got permission first) and used mine for an example even though it is not the best. Wanted to see if we can get anyone to say they are willing. We will start another thread for finished assignments.

Ok, going to run this by you , and hear your thoughts, and if there is an interest, I will launch it.....
What I want to do here , is hand out an Assignment to anyone who would like to try..

The Assignment, is a SHOW and TELL Theme.. In other words, You tell me the area where you are located... as close as you wish, and maybe a landmark nearby... I will then Google that area, and come up with a project for you to shoot... Any State/ Country or Wherever, just get me as close as you can... ( Example ---> ) Georgia, Rydal, Landmark or Nearest City, Pine Log.... I will take it from there , and assign a project.. You WILL show and Tell me , and Other Viewers, what your area, by my assignment, Has to offer! ( SELL ME ON YOUR LOCATION ! )

This assignment is going to be Critiqued by me and whoever else wants to join in, by using a point system, 100 points maximum .. critiquing in 10 separate categories , each category 1 to 10 points awarded... Naturally this will be an IMO Critique, and hope to be a little more jagged then usual... I'm No Critique god, and NOT Perfect, but willing to Give the Opinion.....

The assignment will also ask you to write a little, ( just a little ) a short Manuscript type paragraph... In other words the assignment will ask for (3) Photos Max.. each photo will be allowed 100 words Max. for a storyline description.. I think this is a good practice , Editors and photo buyers Eat up a Photo and Manuscript submission, and many ask for this... You can copy your manuscript right from the PC, or tell it in your own words.. again , just a short paragraph per photo. MAX 100 words per photo...

__________________________________________________ ___________________

Heres the point System , I will CRITIQUE by, and rules..

#1.....DO photos Match Assignment (3 Photos Max )................ 1 to 10 Points

#2.....Do photos selected interest the Viewer............................. 1 to 10 Points
#3.....Do photos MATCH the Manuscript Paragraphs ( 100 Word Max. and can be
Shorter than this ) Each Photo (3) requires a Paragraph.......... 1 to 10 Points

#4.....Composition on each Separate Photo'
Photo 1................................................. .................. 1 to 10 Points
Photo 2 .................................................. ................ 1 to 10 Points
Photo 3 .................................................. ................ 1 to 10 Points

#5.... Technicals... DOF Choice/ Focus/ etc..
Photo 1................................................. .................. 1 to 10 Points
Photo 2................................................. .................. 1 to 10 Points
Photo 3 .................................................. ................ 1 to 10 Points

#6 Overall Presentation .................................................. ..... 1 to 10 Points
______________
Perfect Score ---------> 100

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is an example:

Anyways I am looking to improve my skills and what better way to do it. I wanted to go with the black and white theme to give it an old feel. So here it is.

Pine Log, GA:

The community of Pine Log is located at the foot of Big Pine Log Mountain and was once called "Possum Trot". This town was made up of about 30 cabins that were lined along the creek. In the mid 1800's this was a thriving town. The main store at the time called "The Bradford Store" was a store you could get anything you needed. Although no longer open it stil stands today.

Along with the homes and The Bradford Store there is a small church. Pine Log Methodist Church was built in 1842. The original meeting house was a log structure which doubled as a school. The grounds now consists of a campground and tabernacle built in 1888, and cemetery that began in 1850. Many descendents of the first members still attend this church today.

There are still many places to see and much history in this town. Even though it is small it is still plentiful with cattle farms and many crops as well. As most have forgotten this small town nestled between to mountains many still call it home.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you are interested just chime in here with the town you live in. I will Google it and post the assignment. I will then start a new thread to post assignments to. Hopefully we can learn something about everyone's town.

Rex, sorry, Bishop's Falls is almost 500 kilometres from here!!! You will have to Google some more and find something much closer than that.

Interesting that google shows Taylorsville is a town. I guess it is its own city, but really it is just a suburb of Salt Lake City. There aren't really any towns within a short driving distance. Most of the interesting stuff is downtown salt lake, but if you really want me to try out Taylorsville I will give it a shot, I actually just moved from there.

ETA: This will be a tough assignment, since it is just a regular neighborhood, houses, shopping centers, you know the usual, but unless you want to give me the easy downtown assignment there isn't anything much better.

ok changed it. People if I give you a bad town where you fear for your camera let me know. Google Maps does not show that kind of info.

Also if anyone else want to jump in and help give assignments then "come-on".

I will most definately need help critiquing these. This will be tons of fun I think to see all the small towns.
