Ok, I know this has been brought up before..... I even brought this up before, but I can't find the old post!
I am getting ready to do an "art show". It's smalltime & local, nothing big, & to benefit a nonprofit. My dilemma is that I'm debating whether to sign my photographs personally, or use a digital signature as I've seen many do selling through DPCPrints.
If I do the digital sig, then maybe somehow I can incorporate a little history of the photo, as they were all taken at historic places.
Also, I'm debating whether to print them myself or to have them run off somewhere. I'd prefer to print myself as this feels more "right" with the creative process. On the other hand, would store prints really be better quality???? The last time I sold a few at another local art show, I had people asking did I also print them myself. This hadn't really struck me before.....
Any suggestions? Please share what you do....
Thanks!

What would you be printing with? If you have a high quality printer and paper, then go for it.

Are you custom matting your prints? A history of the image might look good in a separate matte cutout.

I have a pretty good quality printer.... not a professional one, but a lot of my photos come out better when I print them. I know my printer & the color tones. But then some seem to come out better from a shop.
I am curious from an art standpoint as to what others prefer. My thoughts have been leaning towards the creation of the art from start to finish, if solely by the artist, is worth more.....

Re: the image history... I was thinking of that also, placing it on the matte. Maybe I'll do some hand signed, framed, matted, with history on the matted, & then run off some prints with a digitally placed frame/matte/border with the title & history printed on it.... these I would sell for less.

Are you printing at a good lab? I know of very few mid-range printers that print better than a pro lab.

If you go to a good lab, download their printer profile and soft proof your prints. Then, you can see approximately (assuming a calibrated monitor) how your prints will look on paper.

Your printing ideas sound good.

I always sign my prints. If white space if left below the image area then that is a perfect place for singing (I would do it with pencil in the area that shows and acid free ink in the part that is covered by matting). If matted to the edge of the print then I would sign the print anyway (in acid free ink)but also sign the matting. As a further step, having contact info on the back of the print is always good.
