My portrait shot is starting out in the low 4's...this does not bode well for my score. I had a very, very tough time deciding between shots. I can't post my outtake until after, because it's the same person. Oh well.

:( sorry to hear.
One question though... are you happy with the result?
I don't know which is yours, but remember that unless it is a portrait of a celebrity or something, portraiture is very personal, and therefore difficult to judge.
People have a hard time identifing with that kind of thing.
Doesn't necessarily make your 'bad' :)
Hang in there!

Judy, you've had some strong entries in the past, and you'll have even stronger ones in the future. It's early still, you never know. This'll be a tough one to judge- a lot of very good portraits in the mix. I'll be interested to see how this Challenge plays out.

I had a tough time deciding, too. I think I probably would have done better with my outtake below (a different subject entirely, so I'm not revealing anything).

This is a good question.

Even if I score very lowly in this challenge, I'll be satisfied with a portrait which I really enjoyed taking and looking at again and again.

My portrait started in mid 5's, wich is more than expected. Though I am not happy whith the shoot and I know that is a long way to learn something...

Perhaps more than any other Challenge, you can get a low score on this one and still wind up with a shot that you'll frame and hang on your wall. A nice consolation prize.

I have left this quote on more than one portrait photo in the past here at DPC:

"It is easy to make a picture of someone and call it a portrait. The difficulty lies in making a picture that makes the viewer care about a stranger." - Paul Strand"

In this environment (DPC), this plays an important role in the rating your photo will receive.

that sucks!
My computer froze as it was uploading my shot for the black challenge. I was really pissed & upset about it.
I got over it, evetually.
Hope your frustration dissipates as mine did!

My score wasn't really the issue as much as how tough it is to decide between two different photos. My gut feeling was to go with a different one, but in sharing with others, I began to see merits in the one I submitted.

Am I happy with it? Enough to print and give to the subject, certainly. Lot's of room for improvement, however. This challenge in particular has been very much about learning, which has been wonderful.

I will say that the photos in the challenge are receiving much higher votes from me than I've given in the past. I think there are some just wonderful shots.

Judy, I`m with you all the way...only I`m just clinging to 4 at the moment.

Like you, I couldn`t decide between the two shots ..one conventional and one otherwise..........I went with otherwise.
I much preferred the composition but was a bit sloppy in the post processing....oh well, I`m new to portraiture and I`m learning very quickly what NOT to do.

I"ve climbed to 3.8000! To the answer the perennial question, I'm very happy with the shot, that's why it's in the basement.. Ah well, It's not a suprise... my hope was to get to 4.5 with it. we'll see ;]

I'm also in the 3's, and actually, I sort of expected it this time. And that's okay by me.

I can't resist and have to join in expressing my distress at the positively naff score received so far, with what I personally think is the best picture i've ever submitted (it's also the first one that i consider to really be in focus, which has been a consistent failing of mine).

I'm not sure if it's irony that two thirds of the comments so far are regarding the rule of thirds... (or rather, recommending cropping so that said rule is chucked out the window).

Still, I'm totally chuffed with the new challenge (I'm a magazine junkie) so will remain of good cheer and plot my next submission with bubbly excitement.

I am hovering just below the mid 4s,
wonder if this would have done any better ?
(nothing similar to my entry)

I knew the entries would be a cut above for portraits (I was right on this one!) and know my skills in Portraiture are perhaps my weakest. I entered the best I could do given my lack of subjects (it's a self portrait). I've got a lower score going but I think it fits my weaker entry. I didn't think I would enter (intimidated a bit) but pushed myself to do something creative and give it a try.

Well done Theresa,
If you don`t try..you don`t learn and improve.
You made the right decision to enter.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, Gordon. (Something quite vulnerable about a self portrait) If my artsy shot of a building doesn't capture the feel of it -- no loss. Not so easy when it's a shot of me or someone I care about and I don't do it justice.

Good for you! :) I'm glad you went ahead and entered.
