We had a great time a year ago, but this time we'll skip the heat.

Date: September 13
Locations:Let's be on the Mall in the morning, when the temps will be low and we'll want all the light, and then go to the Arboretum in the afternoon, when it'll be warmer and we'll enjoy what shade there is.

Morning on the Mall: Library of Congress building, Supreme Court, U.S. Capitol, and any monuments that interest people

Lunch in Chinatown: the arch, street shooting, interesting shop fronts

Afternoon at the Nat'l Arboretum. There are also tram tours.

Dinner at my house for a BBQ.

Night shoot: Pentagon 9/11 memorial. Here's what the Web site says about photography:
"Photography is permitted within the Pentagon Memorial. However, ... photography is restricted at all other locations [at the Pentagon] (i.e. pedestrian and vehicular pathways; drop-off areas)."

Confirmed Participants:
levyj413
Nikolai1024
banmorn
scooter97
marcbenton (at least the morning)
budya (after dinner)
MaryO
BlueZamia (until dinner)
giega (until early afternoon)

Expressed interest, but haven't confirmed:
bs-photos
timbrumley
JBHale

Hold your breathe, Jeffrey. I'm thinking yes. (There is no ice in September, right?)

Anybody prefer any particular weekend? Probably one of the middle weekends is best, to avoid Labor Day and Rosh Hashanah.

You could be optimistic about that heat thing, ya' know ;-) Although this weekend has been the nicest Memorial day weekend I can remember, and I've been in the DC area since ... well, let's just say decades have been involved. So maybe we'll get lucky.

Anyway, I may be gone the 3rd weekend of Septmber but otherwise look unscheduled for weekends that month. So count me in, and if you need help organizing I'd be willing to lend a hand and/or minivan, as needed.

Boy, you're not kidding about this weekend. It's been spectacular!

Okay, let's say Sept. 13. There! One decision made. :)

I like the wandering the streets idea for at least part of the time.

I loved the zoo, but we did do that last year.

I didn't make the gardens last year......was that enjoyable enough to those who went to consider that as an option?

Can anyone find the thread for last June's event?

I've searched for many combinations of:
DC
Washington
levyj413
gtg

and I can't find it.

I'd like to toss my name in this time again. I had a good time last year and got good photos. I should get a membership and start a portfolio here to share. I'm not sure about which vehicle i'll have but I might be able to pry the keys to our Trailblazer out of my wife's hands for a day. I can try to head up the Union Station group for the Metro bound folks too.

Looking forward to this. Now I have to make sure nothing else gets in the way.

Cool, Tim. We'll figure out rides as the day gets closer. I have a minivan, too.

I just read this thread and dang I have a convention I have to set up a booth and run that weekend or I would have loved to come out. I haven't been to DC since I was a kid and I have a friend that lives there now and I could stay with. If you happen to change the weekend, I would love to know about it!!

Awww crap. I've got a wedding on Sept 13. I guess I can't make it :( unless the date changes.

Put me on for at least part of the day. Though there's no way I'll subject you guys to my bad leg for the whole time again. I'll either join in later or leave early. Now, here's hoping the price of gas will go down between now and then. :-X

Jeb-- the Botanical Gardens provided good photos and plenty of chances for macro shots.

Rock Creek park sounds cool, I don't know squat about it though, good chance to learn.

I missed out on the zoo last year but I think I'll be able to go and take my daughter as an excuse. haha She needs to learn about the animals.

Is the C&O canal too far to travel? Maybe around Great Falls or Old Anglers' Inn?

The canal runs from Georgetown (effectively downtown) out as far as you'd want to go into Maryland.

Great Falls and Old Anglers' are 20-30 minutes away from downtown. To make it worth the trip, I'd plan to spend the morning or afternoon out there.

I've been wanting to go to DC each of the last two years and something has always come up. September should be good as far as weather is concerned. I'm not sure about your side trip in July. If the weather looks good then, I may come down for that one. Any shooting destination would be fine with me since I haven't taken any pictures there in about 20 years and that was with a P&S film camera.
