I am 16, and unfortunatly still a Girl Scout. Mock all you want, it looks damn good on a college application form. Anyways, i am trying to do a Gold Award(the highest award i can get in girly scouts) and was trying to get by by having my huge 65 hour project be doing 50 meaningful photographs. In other words, i was going to yo 50 challenges and be over with it. But i just got verbally beaten by the local head queen Girl Scout lady about my project not being 'concrete' enough for her. Obviously this was more for me then benifiting my community(you guys) and the Girl Scout head haunchos dont like that. So i need help coming up with an idea for a project concerning photography that will physically benifit my community(you guys). help?

This website could use a new coat of paint.

First of all, why should anyone mock you? I don't think anyone here would make fun of you about being a girl scout but if anyone else does...be proud of who you are and of what is important to you.

Secondly, let me think on this and get back to you.

Kathrine, scout projects, as yous tated at the end have to benefit a community. These projects are a lot easier to push through your approval channels if they benefit your local community, right? So here the idea: Create a photo documentation around your community (beauty in the ordinary, eco-issues (popular!), buildings, local flowers, animals,...). And then create an exhibit in your library, town hall...
???

How about 50 photographs showing the meaningful relationship between the Girl Scouts and your real world community.

This is a tough question. There is little you can do on the internet to physically benefit a community.

Perhaps you can use your photography to benefit your community at home. I would advise sitting down with a notebook and writing down some ideas that could help the folks around you. Something that may help families in need??

I don't know hon. Like I said, tough question.

Perhaps you could organize Photography Exhibition for Charity, or coordinate with local photographers to aid a non-profit organization or charity in getting some good advertising photos. Perhaps a Local historic group could use some assistance in photo documentation of some of their collections. Perhaps you could work with photographers to obtain rights to produce some selected prints for a charity auction. There should be lots of ways to use photography to help your community. Being an Eagle Scout myself I know what you are going through in coming up with a project.

Why not volunteer your time to take photos at charity events? Or perhaps take photos at local schools, generally they have websites and I know the quality of pics are not good. Perhaps you could "help" the local Chamber of Commerce with thier directory by taking photos of local buisnesses and business people. Just some ideas.

Keep up the good work, one of my best friends from high school got her Gold Award. I was working on my Wo-He-Lo for Camp Fire at the same time. We helped each other out loads. Ultimately, there were 2 Gold Awards, 3 Wo-He-Los and 5 Eagle Scouts from my graduating class.

I like this idea. Or some sort of photojournalism / awareness-raising project.

Find a local charity or non-profit and ask what you can do for them with your camera. Or do a book "my community", "My town", photograph local events, make a tourist book for your town... Lots of ideas.

And I think the Girl Scouts is stupid (just kidding!)

oh hey! good idea on my part i think. maybe i could do a charity fundraiser for Ray of Hope or something here locally as jhomrighaus said, and people on the dpc could donate photos or something. All procedes to the Oragnization. Sound good? is that even legal?

I like this idea...isn't the point for YOU to do something that benefits the community?? Not get others to donate to your project??

Sorry, if I sound negative. You are getting some good ideas here.

Time / Life used to put out a great series of photo books called,"A Day In The Life" of some country or another. It was really quite extraordinary. You could do something similar with your Guiding Troop / Community. It would involve organizing, editorial, phot0graphy, etc. Furthermore, it can then be bundled and sold within the community as a fund raiser.

Just a thought and BTW, you Gals make great cookies!! ;-)

Animal Shelters and Rescue Organizations are in constant need of people to take decent photghraphs of their candidates for adoption.

They usually operate on a shoestring, and are glad to have talented volunteer aid.....and it looks to me like you do decent work.

Do a *REALLY* good thing in your community and stick with it after your project is over.

if i organize the whole thing and am, say, a curator for a charity fundraiser, that counts as me benifiting the community

You're a girl scout, ie young, and hopefully bright eyed and bushy tailed. There's plenty of old fogeys like me that benefit from being around some of that. (I speak for myself). You might benefit from the influence of an old fogey giving you some of that wise and world-weary advice they possess. (I speak a whole lot less for myself just there).

You can keep using the virtual stuff and get feedback and ideas from people here, as indeed you are doing :-)

Maybe there's someone in your neck of the woods that's be willing (or even excited) to have a little involvement - adding the weight of some grey matter when the blue meanies start pushing the goddamn kid with the camera... You get my drift?

It's just a thought. Anyone around Montana up for some social documentation? (e.g.)

How about organizing an event, getting together people that wouldn't have the means to get profesional family photos taken and local photographers. Maybe see if the local art school or camera club could donate the use of a studio and volunteer some students. That way you are helping the students build their portfolios and the families by having nice portraits taken.

I wondered how long this would take to be brought up. As the prices of them cookies go up and the size of the box goes in the other direction I'd ask for 150 to make up for the difference.
