If you seen a man drowning and you could either save him or take his picture what F stop would you use?

F/2.8
I'd want to burst as many sharp frames as possible to capture the action.
Unless I had the new 5D mkII. Then I'd shoot video.
;O)

Hopefully you would at least extend a branch to the guy since it would create a nice leading line so f/8-f/11 depending on the lens.

Throw a rope and use a smaller F stop F11 to 22 (Depending on the lighting) so I could get a slower shutter speed and show some motion blur to emphasize the action. Maybe I would ask him to wait a moment so I could get out the polarizing filter to help reduce the glare from the water and also help with the motion blur.

You forgot to get him to hold the slave flash to light up behind him!!!

I would position the sun behind him if possible and use the slave flash for fill or as the main light source in the front.
.. If he was drowning then he would drown your flash as well.

(Thinks... Mas is she dumb...)

All boring shots imo. No one asked him to smile first, sheesh.

I would probably ask his wife to take her foot off his head long enough for me to get an uncluttered shot ;)

I think I'd...oh wait, you said REAL photographers...I'm just a fake one. ;)

Maybe the person to ask is Irene, she gets the best water drop shots....

Im not a real photographer so I would assist with holding the slave flash or reflector...

set the camera on timer, and say f:16 or so depending on the time of day and brightness outside, then get a shot of me saving him...

Would you shoot in colour or black and white?
11/06/2008 04:57:57 PM · #16
color - you can always convert to BW, but not the other way around.

Ahhh, but what if you're using film? We are asking "real" photographers aren't we? Real photographers only use film, pffft ;P

I was going to tie my my waterproof P&S onto the end of the rope, with the lens at Macro and the shutter in burst mode with a ten-second timer -- close-ups always sell better in the tabloids ...

Well, that's not completely true, but it's probably a heckuva lot more work than it's worth ...
