I didn't want to hijack other threads with my questions so I started a new thread. I recently took a trip to Taiwan with my 10D, 24-70, 70-300 DO, flash and other small accessories in my Lowepro Nova 4 AW. If I remember correctly that bag with everything weighed approximately 15-20 lbs and my wife mentioned that it was very heavy on a few occasions and that's a lot of weight for someone with occasional lower back pain so I am looking at roller bags (another reason I started a new thread, the others were about backpacks). I'm considering the Lowepro Rolling CompuTrekker Plus, Think Tank Photo Airport International and the Pelican 1510LOC. I carry a 10D (50D is on the way), at least two lenses (16-35 or 24-70) and the 70-300 DO, 550EX Speedlite, rocket air, spare battery, and filters. I have a 17" laptop so that might eliminate the Rolling CompuTrekker if I don't bring my rolling computer bag. Does anyone have experience with those bags/cases? Any pros/cons? Other recommendations? Thanks!

I have a Pelican Case for my gear when I travel. Hands down, it is the best if you are concerned about protection. I'd have a walk-around bag for the essentials on my day outings as the Pelican case may be a bit much. If you are looking at a Pelican, check out Boss Safety as their prices for these cases do not reflect the silly surcharge levied on gear that is associated with "Photography". Hope that helps. |

Ivo, a walk-around bag is a very good point and one I thought about. I even thought about packing my current bag inside my rolling laptop bag but I haven't done a fit test but then it still doesn't get me away from the overall weight issue. I just did some research on the Lowepro website and found smaller Nova bags that I need to see in person such as the Nova 2 and Nova 3. Those might be large enough to hold my camera and maybe my flash for a day trip away from the roller case. I'm very much sold on the Nova AW bags even more so now after my recent Taiwan trip. It rained a LOT there and all my gear was very dry and snug inside my Nova 4. My only concern with the Nova bags is their padding. It seems to have compressed a bit since I bought it a few years ago. Anyone know if washing it will bring it back to life?

I just use my shoulder bag and put it inside my carry on roller bag for travel. Works like a charm.
If you wanted to, it would not be difficult to find either a foam insert or a padded divider system to go inside of the suitcase. |

Spazmo, I've considered placing my current bag inside my current laptop roller bag for travel but it still doesn't get me away from the overall weight issue unless I start bringing less gear in the first place. I thought I had it pared down to the body with 2 lenses and a flash but L glass isn't light. I've also considered "travel lenses" from Sigma and/or Tamron if they weigh less than my L glass. Not my most efficient way to cut weight off my gear bag but one I've considered.
As for a foam insert in my current roller bag it won't work because the bag doesn't open like a traditional roller suitcase but instead it opens from the top only.
I really like the Pelican pick-n-pluck foam system (I had a Pelican case before with the same system) and what I could do, in theory, is pluck out part of the foam for a smaller day bag and the remaining foam would be molded for my gear.

Lowepro Rolling CompuTrekker Plus - 5 star rating reviews
Think Tank Photo Airport International - looks cool and affordable!
Pelican 1510LOC - 4.5 star rating reviews. Looks will protect your toys well. Lowest price among all.
IMO, i will go for Lowepro Rolling CompuTrekker Plus due to two option, back pack and rolling. whenever convenient. You CANT roll everywhere or anywhere :)

Porter Case
I have one of these, and I really like it. Sturdy and safe for camera gear, plus it turns into a platform/trolley to stack other luggage on, so you can haul other bags thru the airport, hotel, on it. I take the foam out and use it for a non-photo-gear travel carry on, too. |

You should also check out Tenba. They make some nice stuff. I've been using a Tenba DB-15C backpack for a few years now and I'm very happy with it. It does get heavy at times though. I might go for one of the rolling backpacks next, like this one or this one.

Before making a final decision search around and ensure you get value for your money. If you travel a lot it is necessary to go for a sturdier and protective laptop case.

For the past 10 years I have used numerous large Pelican cases for transporting medical equipment and small cases for waterproof storage of bits and pieces whilst white water kayaking. Never had a breakage (case or contents) or leak. Cannot recommend them enough. My only comment would be that the 'pick and pluck foam' in many of the cases probably isn't a great idea if you like storing bodies and lenses without caps. You might end up with little bits of foam where you don't want them. Go for the dividers instead. |
