HELP!! Can someone identify this BIRD???

I've been trying for hours searching field guides and online. Any help would be appreciated.
It's some kind of shorebird, taken on the Central Coast of California (Morro Bay).

I think it could be some kind of heron, but the feathers are sooo different. I don't know how much they would change as it ages. Pretty obvious I'm NOT a birder!!!

juveniles can look really different from adults, and also adults can look very different depending on the season - not sure if the latter case applies specifically to green herons...

curious, how close were you able to get to him? Green herons are usually very shy and easily disturbed (all herons are, that I know of)

Morro Bay area is known for its population of Green Herons; they actually breed there, I believe. Been around a long time. I'm pretty sure that's a juvenile.

ETA: I guess it does look like juvenile Night Heron also, sigh... I'm more familiar with the Greens, and that's what i thought it was as soon as I saw it. I used to hang out around Cambria, Morro Bay, San Simeon a LOT, back in the day.
