What do you think the drawback would be for buying a factory refurbished canon? I'm thinking seriously of bowing from new to refurbished for a 40d or just go brand new 30d.

My experience of buying refurb is from Apple and I have been totally satisfied. I would not hesitate to buy from Canon outlet or direct from Canon refurb. I believe they still bear a full year warranty.

I've bought lot's of refurbished Canon gear and always been delighted with it - indistinguishable from new except for the cost :- )

I've always only bought from B&H and Amazon. Is Adorama as reputable as B&H? They have a 40d bodies available with a 2 year mack warranty.

Would these be Canon factory refrubished??

Adorama very reputable. Should be factory refurbs, yes. I wouldn't hesitate to buy Canon refurbed. And 40D is way better than 30D, IMO.

My experience with referbs is always good. There are those who suggest that because they are referbs, they get extra attention to detail. Good luck.

I have purchased refrubished cameras too, and have been totally happy. I was happy with the savings too!

I quite like refurbished stuff.

I think of it this way: there was some problem with it, and somebody else got to go through the pain of having to deal with it.
Now it is fixed, and I get a tested gadget that really works.

Sometimes the label "refurbished" is applied for other reasons, too, i.e. there wasn't even anything wrong with it in the first place.

I purchased my 70-200 F2.8L IS from Adorama, received in perfect condition..

Lots of good response here, I had no idea so much people bought refurbished. It's worth a try, at least i have my rebel to fall back on.

only negative thing is resell value.

Huh? You buy a camera from the current model run for less than the going price, and when you sell it it's just like any other used camera of that vintage, how can you *lose* in terms of resale value? One of the NICE things about factory refurbs is that you recapture a greater percentage of your outlay when you sell them.

New 40d = $900
Refurbished 40d = $700 savings $200

Resell both used at $500 each, i recover $700 you recover $500.

I bought a refurbished 400D this past summer - you'd never know that it had been owned before. Works perfectly, no marks, nothing. Just like new.

If you can save a few hundred by buying refurbished, go for it - the unit is returned to manufacturer's specs, after all.

A better way to put this:

New camera: cost of ownership $400

Refurb camera: cost of ownership $200

We've both recovered $500 of our initial investment; that's 55% of the cost of the new one, and 71% of the cost of the refurbed one.

A lot also depends on who is doing the refurbishing. If the original manufacturer did the refurbishing, they often come with a factory warranty.

If it is someone else doing it, then it depends on how good of a job they do. And the warranty may be only through the dealer, or the company that did the refurbishing.

Oh yeah! I am referring to factory-refurbed cameras here, I thought we all were. I'd expect a HELL of a good price on locally refurbed gear before I'd even think of touching it. I want the manufacturer's warranty on it as-new.

How much can you really save from buying refurb? Is the $200 in the examples above realistic or is that just for the example?

On the Canon website I could get the 55-250 IS for $239 (refurb) or get a brand new one from B&H for $250. $11 doesn't seem worth it at all to me unless it's different for camera bodies?

I would get a new camera body.. wont compromise there. But will consider a used/refurb lens IF the savings are of the order of a few hundred bucks. More so for the professional lenses that are priced at many hundreds/thousands.

Jus IMO.

Ok That makes sense. I won't be in the market for a professional lens for a while.

The good thing about factory refurbished products is that someone at the factory gives the item a complete inspection prior to it leaving the factory because they do not want it coming back again. So you usually end up with a reliable product.

Original factory refurbs can be a very good deal. They have a 100% quality inspection rate. (They need to make sure it was repaired properly and is fully functional before it leaves.) Often production line pieces do not get anywhere near the scrutiny.

Unless you are ordering straight from the manufacturer, you really need to ask. I was offered a "factory" refurbished unit once. When I mentioned that the packaging did not look like something that would come from Canon, even for a refurb, the reply was that the refurbishing was done by a "special", "dedicated", camera refurbishing "factory". "Even better than Canon could do." Yeah... Uh-huh....
