Internet Explorer 8 Released, Progress Unmistakable

Here's a third-party review of it.

Some excerpts from that article:

"...performance tests that showed IE8 trumping Firefox 3.05 and Chrome 1.0"

"There are currently about 1,200 add-ons available for IE8..."

"In terms of improved standards support, IE8 now passes the Acid 2 test completely, although it still fails Acid 3 miserably"

"Accelerators, Web Slices, and visual search suggestions, which improve how quickly users can get typical browsing tasks done"

Download it from the official IE8 site.

hmmmmm....

I just read this review, which says it is slower than FF and Chrome.

Probably depends on the specific conditions of the test/use

And best of all it has InPrivate Browsing which means you can spend time looking at dpchallenge while at work and there will be no trace of you having done so once you exit the program!

I've had IE8 for a while now.

I only use it for two websites. One is my telephone/internet company; their site doesn't work with FF, technically after the phone call I had with them yesterday their site isn't compatible with IE8 either *shrug* for a telecommunication company they seem to suck. The other is to view security cams at a place of employment (again not compatible with FF).

Mossberg, himself, says that he was testing a beta version of IE 8, so it's not an apples-to-apples speed comparison.

If you know Mossberg, you learn to take his reviews with a grain of salt. He is just an old guy who tries to keep up with technology. He has been doing these personal "reviews" for a long time.

Have you invoked IE 8's new "compatibility" feature for that site? Click the button to the right of the address bar...

Been using IE8 for awhile now and love it. Very few conflicts and the compatibility button works well on most of those pages that do have issues. Only exception I have found is on Bank Of Americas billpaying page where there are some weird conflcits with two of their buttons.

I have just downloaded and installed. Thanks for the news.

I had a problem with my browser that would hang if I had opened multiple tabs from some websites and then started to close some of them. That was the first thing I tested. Loaded the website, opened additional tabs, read the news and closed the tabs - no problem. That alone was woth the upgrade. The accellerator is also an extremely useful tool.

So far I was only impressed. I do not use Firefox, etc.

I just uninstalled it on this older machine that I have 'cause it slowed it down too much and gave me an error message EVERY time I fired it up.

It also seemed to just up and hunt around for no apparent reason.

It apparently doesn't like XP much.

I went back to IE 6, which I'd been using, and the problems went away.

I also use XP and it works fine so far.

I tried to download it but something popped up saying it would not work with Vista 64

Except that any IT dept worth its salt has logs of request so they know what system is talking to what system regardless of any tracing done at your PC. In short firewalls/proxys etc log connections from your system to IP's on the web.

Good point. So its back to good behavior then.

"In terms of improved standards support, IE8 now passes the Acid 2 test completely, although it still fails Acid 3 miserably"

The acid 3 test is hilarious on IE 7 too.

I have been using chrome for a while now and I *detest* the amount of space is sponges up on my C drive.

How does IE8 compare in this respect?

I want a tiny C drive footprint because that's how I like to run my computer. Last I checked, you can't choose where to install chrome and even if you could there's boatloads of *crap* that it shoves onto C that does large amounts of nothing.
