Just got my new 40D with 17-85mm lens!!

WOHOO!!

BUT...

The guy at the store said I must charge the battery for 12 hours...?

Can anyone comment, because I remember with my 350d I charged it until it was green and Bob was my uncle?

If it came with the charger, the charger lights will tell you when it is fully charged. Should only take a couple hours tops from dead. At least mine do. Leaving it on charge longer will not make it 'stronger' or more powerful or last longer. Just make you wait longer to use it.

Yeah it's a brand new, so I got it as a kit. Thanks for the advice, ill wait till it's green and start shooting like a bandit that just robbed a bank!

I let mine charge overnight before I first shot with it, but that is a habit that I picked up from years past. I don't think the modern batteries require an extended first charge anymore, but old habits die hard. Once it is green, you should be good to go.

My Canon battery and the generic one for my 40D only take about 90min tops to charge from dead...

I was in the store yesterday playing with a 40d. Decided that I need to get one =)

Not sure if I want to go used or not though. Brand new with kit was $1200, body $999.

When it comes to batteries, they are all the same, they need to be calibrated,
Which means, you have to charge it full, till the indicator turn green, then discharge it fully, which means to use it till the battery is fully used and completely dead, few years ago we used to do that 3 times for the maximum optimization.
Not sure how it is right now, but I would do the same.
Congratulation ..

Like has been said before the battery will charge in a couple of hours. The batteries now days do not have a memory so they don't have to completely dead before recharging. Enjoy the new toy! I love my 40D and have faith you love yours.

I may yet be getting rid of my 40D and my canon 10-22... depending on my job and the tax man...
