Hi,

I'm new to the world of photography and am deciding over which DSLR Camera to buy - Canon 50D or 500D? I think I've decided that I'll opt for Canon over Nikon however, any suggestion/s is/are welcome. In terms of weight, of course the lighter the better however, if 50D is really worth the weight, then I'll probably go for that. Also, if both of those cameras' features other than one has the video recording function and the other a faster fps, then 500D would most likely be my preferred choice as it'll be good for traveling.

Hope to hear advice/s from all you professionals :) thanks!

As a Canon person, I feel I can say this - I helped a friend buy a camera on Wednesday and we looked at the 500D and were severely underwhelmed - my friend Claus bought the Nikon D5000 and I would've too if I had been in his position. I know you have decided to go for Canon, so I would say take a good look at the 50D - we didn't take a look at that, but perhaps it would've appealed more than the 500D. I suspect this was all down to learning curves - the Canon didn't seem as intuitive to use so perhaps as familiarity grows it would come more into its own.

Both are good cameras - obviously different price range / weight range / and the 50D has a higher frame rate etc - however the processor in the heart of it is the same in both cameras. So in effect the image quality will be the same - it is the camera build quality, connectivity, Frame rate and the like which will be better on the 50D. But then you pay for the privilege in terms of cost and weight.

Keep in mind that the 60D is due in the Autumn.

p.s. have you checked the buy/sell forum to see if anyone is selling a Canon in your part of the world ?

60D! woooo. Anybody heard what its specs are going to be? (although, it is highly unlikely i'll buy... It's a recession after all!)

I use both the 300D (IR dedicated) and the 30D. I know, they are both older models, but they compare similarly. The 300D is a lot lighter and almost feels like a toy. It is plastic and honestly feels cheap. But it gets the job done. The 30D is heavier, but the build is much stronger and it seems more rugged. The lens attachment plate (or whatever its called, I'm on my first cup of coffee) is metal and I fear less when attaching heavy lenses such as the 100-400L. On the 300D, I feel I have to be more mindful of the connection between the two as the camera might break.

Additionally, I call the 300D my 'hurry up and wait' camera. Not only is the fps much much better on the 30D, the write to card speed is in a different league. Cards are getting faster and faster but it is irrelevant with the 300D - after about 6 RAW frames, I must wait a good 20sec. for the buffer to clear. Action shots are nearly pointless unless I wait to make sure I start shooting in the middle of the action rather than just as it starts (hope that makes sense).

I just looked at the specs for the 500D and the 50D. They have gotten closer in speed, but there is still a significant difference. I also found this: comparison and another.

Your choice is really dependent on what you shoot. If you need a fast camera that can take some bumps and bruises, my suggestion would be the 50D. If you don't, and weight and price are more important, choose the 500D. Good luck and I'm sure you'll enjoy no matter which you chose!

dolls, Your lens choices will play a huge roll in photo quality regardless of your camera body. If your budget is limited (whose isn't?) then my advice would be to consider the remaining budget for a quality lens in the selection of your first camera body.

There is one high-quality, low cost lens, the Canon 50mm 1.8, for around $100. Not a zoom and not super build quality, but the glass is excellent. Otherwise you can probably think $300 and higher for good glass.

Hope this is helpful,

Ray

I currently own a Canon 50D and its a big learning curve, I watch video's on youtube and just mess with the settings, and on occasion i choose the perfect settings for the perfect protrait, I am far from good with it but its a learning process, i ventured into the full manual the other day because it wasnt metering right for my taste of the specific scene, once i start changeing the shutter speed i was getting the setting i wanted it was perfect, but mostly I stay in AV mode but can I get that picture everytime NO not yet but I am getting better, plus you have to consider shooting raw and post processing, If you choose the 50D I would shoot raw but your going to need some post processing software, but thats just my view, it takes a great picture.

I have teh 50D and compared to the XTI it is faster, a whole hell of a lot sharper. Overall, I love it.

I have the 450D, which is about as close to the 500D as you can get. I've played around a bit with the 20D and the 50D. I would take the 50D and this is why:

First, the thumb wheel is vastly superior to the buttons on the 450D/500D.
Second, the 50D is bigger and feels much more comfortable to hold (I have big hands and it hurts after a while of shooting with the 450D).
Third, the LCD display by the shutter button is super handy.
Fourth, there are more custom options and less button clicks to change settings.

That's what I've noticed just by playing around with the 50D.

I've just bought a 500D. I was tempted by the 50D due to it being, well, better, but I figured both would seem leagues better than my broken (since last year) 300D! The thing which swayed me in the end was the video mode on the 500D. I did a film course at uni and love messing around with video, and being able to use all my lenses for that made me drool a little bit :P I didn't mind about the FPS as high-speed photography just isn't something I do. I never had the problem of the 300D feeling like a toy - felt like a camera to me!

I would go for the 50D. Better camera overall. The faster frame rate is worth it.
