I just shot some formal and candid shots for what is basically my friend's mom's band. They only want digital copies of what I took. I intend to process the better pics but give them everything (around 50-70 shots I'd say). They insist that they pay me, but I have no idea what to charge. I don't have top of the line equipment (Canon Rebel and no external flash). Lets say I put about 5 hours into this. The last thing I want to do is over charge. That do you guys think?

If you ever intend to charge for photographic services, I suggest that, whatever you decide to ultimately charge, you figure out what a "real pro" would charge, and then invoice them for the full amount, less a "discount" which brings the bottom line in line with your final price.

i do a bunch of band photography and know the kind of position that you are in b/c i am a musician myself and am friends with all the bands in the area so i dont charge any of them what i really should for the work i do. typically for live shots i charge bands about 20 bucks (just for the fact that i love going to shows and almost dont want to charge at all) for formal shots for bands who i personally know i typically charge 50-75 bucks (depending on how much editing im putting in it may be more) i tend to be very accommodating b/c i know how little money local bands actually have and having been in their position MANY times i cut them a break. if they insist on paying you for ~5 hrs of editing and they are ~friends id probably charge 50 bucks. note: i am a college student and work for very little money, photography is my hobby and not my main source of income so i tend to let myself get the short end of the deal more often than not. thats ok with me. if its not ok with you; charge more.

Heh, was anyone else expected a rambling monologue from Prof_fate at this point?

Eh, we should all know it by heart by now.

Since he isn't a member anymore, I don't expect anything from him. It's been quite refreshing.

Im with you on this one.

I tend to do live show shots for a guest list spot and a t-shirt. For press pack and promo stuff, I charge anywhere from $100-$250 depending on the band, what they want, etc.

I also am dealing with a lot of hardcore/punkrock bands, that walk away from a show on any given night with $50 to get them to the next town.

Really? Where did he go?

Best I can tell he went off the deep end on this site and on Fred Miranda dot com and was either asked to leave or left on his own.

I have been on this site for a while now and always like to read the what do I charge posts. I like the flaming they take from the "real pros", all very entertaining.

I have come to a simple conclusion. Charge whatever you want, do it for free or charge them $10K, it really doesn't matter.

I do weddings as a side job and as someone who does it as a side job I charge all kinds of rates. This year I did a wedding for $300 + 3 cases of beer, but I also did a wedding for $3500. I take the opinion that my rate really is based on my availibility. If Im busy they get charged full price if not I am willing to work w/ them because really anything is more than I would make not doing the shoot at all.

The argument that if you give cheap deals that people will only expect cheap deals is way off. The only people who get sucked into that are people who can't tell a client NO. I have had people say, "You did so and sos weeding last summer for $600, can I get the same deal?" Its an easy response of I can't do that, but since you are a referal from so and so, I can give you an extra 10 8x10 prints. Usually they take it and when you do the math, the extra 10 prints might cost me $20.

DISCLAIMER: You should always have set rates if you have a website of any kind. Doesn't matter what they are. This doesn't mean you need to charge that set rate, but you don't want to be viewed as someone who just picks a number out of the air. Just justify whatever rate you are planning on charging.

I do miss the fact that Prof Fate isn't here to slam my post.
