both a little too soft IMO.. the outtake has stronger contrast but I think the lack of sharpness lowered your score.

Yeah... fair call.

Would it have faired better if I had processed it like this:

Yes, I think the fancy processing really helps in this case, Vlado.

Here is my outtake:

I took this photograph of my mom for the challenge, but then decided not to enter it. Sometimes you just want to share a photo and not have it be judged!

Bugger... damn my minimalist tendencies/preferences. :(

Yeah, the colour one looks much sharper, so I'm sure it would have scored better.

None of these are really outtakes--since I finished the shoot with like 30 min to spare, I just quickly grabbed whichever shot jumped out at me and gave it a once-over. These took longer to edit, and weren't ready 'till the next day:

Same setup, different shot (and combined a few shots so not legal either):

Others from the day:

I usually don't take portraits but on my hunt for a street photography entry (which I didn't get so didn't enter that one either) I got this photo

I know it's not perfect but I was really happy with the genuine smile and the focus. It's a street portrait, he's a busker (you can see the tip of the saxaphone there) and we started chatting and I asked if I could take his photo and voila! however I took it one day too early to be able to submit it to the challenge. Oh well.

I barely missed the deadline, but I thought I'd wait to post these after the challenge was over. Just meant to be fun self-portraits of how I thought my 21st birthday would go (turned out to be fairly accurate too, lol). I don't think any of these would have ribboned, but I wish I could have entered it just for fun :)
