What is your opinion on background music on photography websites...

- just beautiful if done right
- Down right annoying, particularly at work
- just something else to slow a photography website down
- etc

I'm putting together my website and the geek in me is telling me why not to, but the artist in me really likes it :)

Any thoughts really appreciated

Start with the music "off". Offer a way to turn it "on", if the visitor chooses to do so.

I hate it, hate it, HATE IT!!

I often listen to music while I surf the web, and the very last thing I want is to have someone else play THEIR music at me at the same time.

I basically always close it immediately and stay away from it, full stop.

Even when I am not listening to music, I don't want to have to listen to someone else's idea of good music, since chances are that our tastes differ.

If you have a website for a band, or something else that is 100% music related, then fine - I'd expect it there. Anything else, if you think you can't do without music, let me opt IN, but don't force it on me.

Not a fan of music on websites. Usually something the developer likes and rarely something I care to hear. What is worse is when the way to turn it off is missing or difficult to find. I prefer it when it is my option to turn it on, not off.

There is a 99% chance I won't like your choice, and a 0% chance it mixes well with the Pink Floyd I am currently playing.

Hate it ... I leave immediately if any website plays music

Unless the music is your own and the website is for a band or other musical group, leave it off. It is a sure fire way for me to leave the site almost immediately.

There is also the copyright aspect too. We wouldn't like it if our images were appropriated and used on musicians web sites unless proper permission was obtained.

I wonder how people on this site really feel?

But seriously, if you really want it, I like the idea of putting it in a player as an option to turn on, rather than automatically being on.

Hate it. Useful or not, I close the site and walk away.

Nope, don't like it one bit. I usually don't leave the site, but I always turn it off immediately. And it makes me crazy if I can't find the "turn it off" button. Seriously, what's the point? If you really want music, add slideshows to your site and put the music on those.

I really hate it. I run my TV on mute most of the time, too.

Lame midi files that loop... I'm not even going to look for the on/off button. I outta there immediately.

I dont think I have ever found a photography site where music has been used to enhance the actual experience..

Now, some slideshows on websites it works rather well, but if clicking on a slideshow I generally expect to get some music thrown in, but visiting a site and being ambushed by it, Yeuck.. Someone mentioned it below but I usually have music on in the background when browsing the web, its horrible when the music on a website overlaps it.

I suggest leave it out - I doubt many people would see the player and think about switching it on.

music doesn't do anything for a photo site. It also takes time to load it making everything slower.

I shoot rock bands and toyed with playing their stuff in their gallery, but thought it would be a bit lame.

HATE IT!

Thanks guys its as I expected but kinda hoped otherwise. I think I'll put it on but not running, but most people will not see the music on button so perhaps its just a waste of time.

thanks for the help

I can't stand it when I open a window and it starts blaring something at me. It's also one of the reasons I stopped using myspace (other than I didn't like myspace in general).
