Hello. Apologies in advance if I am repeating similar questions. My office is looking for a compact camera for journalists work trips (in a broader sense of the word, i.e. any non-SLR or bulky camera). This is to be used by our reporters to provide quick reporting from press-conferences or any field trips where photographs are taking a supportive role to the text (we have newswires to do majority of coverage). What I am trying to say is that they won't be used to provide an exhibition quality photographs. Top size of our images won't be exceeding 800 pixels at the longest dimension. The budget is about $400.

What I think we can live without:

Mega-Megapixel count, very fast (in light sensitivity terms) lens, low ISO, brilliant noise or colour management, large and colourful LCD preview panels, incredible amount of picture profiles, full manual control.

What's essential:

Low lag time, sturdy zoom and other mechs, decent zoom coverage (28-135mm), option to save uncompressed files, aperture or shutter priority modes, ISO to at least 1600.

I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Canon G11. Bit higher than $400, but renowned for performance and meets all your other criteria.

Panasonic Lumix LX3- little higher than $400, excellent photo quality, very small, discreet. Doesn't meet your whole zoom range (24-60) though. This is essentially the same camera as the Leica D-Lux4.

Nikon P6000. Little bit short on your range (28-112) but is a solid camera.

These are all at least a little over $400, with the G11 being the costliest at $450 from amazon. LX3 is 430 and P6000 is 417.
The interface of the P6000 has gotten some negative feedback from reviewers, but is said to have improved from previous Nikon pocket models. Canon's is lauded. The Canon is the largest and heaviest, the P6000 somewhere in the middle, and the LX3 the smallest and lightest.

There aren't all that many cameras out there that provide RAW and shutter/aperture priority, but those jump to the top of any list I can think of.

Something from the Canon G series G9 G10 or the New G11 would probably do the job. They are a tad over the $400 price range But will give you full manual control, quite compact, built like tanks and provide very nice photographs.

As an off-the-wall suggestion, have you looked at the higher-spec cameraphones that are out at the moment?

Some of these provide excellent P&S functionality. And for your requirements would also allow the photos to be instantly uploaded and accessible.
