NOTE: The posting thread is now operational

*************************************************************

Lots of portraits are undoubtedly taken during the holidays, plus for those in the northern hemisphere doing portraits is a good indoor activity for January. So show us what you got and get some constructive advice.

Rules:
- there are none (but please pay special attention to Guideline #8)

Guidelines
1) Any type of portrait is OK, ranging from head only to whole body, from one person to a large group, from studio to environmental, from self to other people to pets, and from friends/family to professional models
2) Any type of processing is fine, including “expert” editing, so feel free to be creative if you want
3) Preferably post something recent or new, if possible no older than November 1, 2009, but if you have something older to share that is OK as well
4) The posting thread is now operational
5) Try to enter at least one photo per week, but no more than 31 for the month
6) Include something informative with each photo if possible (information about lighting, something about your subjects, etc), and feel free to ask for advice about specific aspects of the photo
7) Please comment as much as possible, and when possible include something constructive as to how the photo could be improved (set up, composition, posing, lighting, processing, etc)
8) When commenting do not offer anything negative about the physical attributes of the model (avoid terms like fat, haggard, ugly, old looking, saggy, baggy, etc)

I'd like to try. I need practice with everything portrait related!
12/25/2009 01:24:46 AM · #17
I'd like to try..just can't quite bring myself to comply with all the rules...especially #8. Not that I'd have any problem with the size of anyone's model...but I don't see how you can critique a portrait that's supposed to be slimming and fails? ie...if your model is 5'8" 95lbs...and yet the photographer somehow manages to find a pose that gives her rolls...how do you tell him/her that the pose makes the model look big if talking about the models size is against the rules?
12/25/2009 01:28:49 AM · #18
now that I re-read how I typed that it doesn't sound good....i mean it terms of the photographers posing not being flattering to the model...how do you tell him the photographer that his posing of the model makes him/her look big/fat/older/scary/etc...if you can't talk about the physical attributes of the model? There is a difference between a models natural looks and what the camera does.
12/25/2009 01:37:05 AM · #19
I'll give this a go,too.
12/25/2009 01:43:14 AM · #20
e.g. - That pose seems a bit awkward maybe if the model was turned slightly to the side. -

Something of that nature maybe... I dunno, imo I would say that and then give a suggestion on how it would be more appealing to me.

Good comment, criticism, and then end on a good comment :]
12/25/2009 02:57:19 AM · #21
I'd like in on this please. Should be fun.

Regarding guideline #8, the key here is TACT, as pointed out already by Eagle40Fox2. Suggestions for improving the look of various body parts can be given without blantantly pointing out what the issue was with the body part in the first place. For example:

Not OK: OMG, those are the biggest belly rolls I have seen in a long time. This will need some serious use of the liquify tool.

OK: You might consider using the liquify tool to straighten out the abdominal line a bit.

OK: Sometimes having the model sit up straigher can make for a smoother abdominal line.

I realize some people still may be offended a bit by the latter two examples, but hey, hopefully we all have grown a bit of a thick skin by competing in the regular challenges. And, as also pointed out by Eagle40Fox2, a suggestion for improvement sandwiched in between two positive comments is a really nice way to go.
