I just ran across this and thought others would find it of interest: Samsung introduces the NX series format with NX10

Nothing like a bunch of competing standards to liven things up. I'm figuring Canon & Nikon will jump into this market with their own large sensor compacts soon.

IMHO this isnt the future of compacts but where SLR's are heading. With the constant resolution improvements of small viewfinder screens, the Mirror Box is history and probably so is the mechanical shutter. This will allow for smaller and lighter lenses as they can mount closer to the sensor.

I would guess that Canon and Nikon will jump in but prob at the high end first. A high end body and a selection of new series lenses, that will not be compatible with what we are using today. Pretty good for business.

The mirror box and mechanical shutter will remain as long as there is a delay in pressing the button and taking the actual picture on electronic shutters. Maybe I'm out of the P&S loop, but isn't this still a significant problem?

Not since Casio came out with the Casio EX-F1 a couple of years ago.

Quote from the Luminious Landscape review:

"There is a control wheel on the top panel that allows you to select one of six different shooting modes. Among these are the ability to start recording images in a memory buffer that keeps clearing itself. When you press the shutter fully the contents of this buffer are saved along with X number of subsequent shots."

With this feature, response time or shutter lag is irrelevant.

Yeh, shutter lag on compacts is not nearly the problem it used to be. The real question is, can they improve AF performance?? Without a mirror box, it means we'd be relying on contrast-based AF using the main sensor. Even with today's DSLRs, the AF speed in this mode is not good.

The mirror box and mechanical shutter don't have anything to do with countering delay. If I shoot the Canon 40D in live view mode, both of those are taken out of the equation and the response time is the same in taking a photo. The main downside of the mirror box being taken out of play is losing AF, but the speed of capturing images looks the same to me.

If I could start again I'd go with something like the Panasonic GF1 and the 20mm f/1.7 lens. It is small, easy to carry, doesn't draw attention like a big dSLR and shoots quite well.
