Hi guys,

Just new to Apple and iMac this week. Have 5D Canon and when I upload all the images go into DPP.

Is there a way to directly get them into iPhoto AND if I do that will it change the RAW images so they will be illegal in challenges.

Looking forward to assistance.

Launch iPhoto and go to
iPhoto > Preferences > General
At the bottom of this window is an option that says "Connecting camera opens" select iPhoto

The original RAW files will be stored in the iPhoto Library unchanged even if you edit the image in iPhoto.

If funds allow I would recommend using lightroom and uninstalling iPhoto ASAP..

I'm not using iPhoto to edit, rather as a place to file my images. I have photoshop to edit.

Where do you guys park your images?

In folders, on my HD :)

ATM I use Adobe Bridge for filing, but I'm going to buy Lightroom because i don't want to upgrade to CS4 (CS3 not 5D Mk II compatible, conversion to DNG takes up to much space and time)

Even with Aperture 2 installed, I use iPhoto. ;-)

FWIW I use:

Capture 1 Pro: RAW conversion => rank images => delete unwanted images => WB => black point/white point => export to Lightroom as TIFF (all work in ProPhoto color space)

Lightroom: (still working in ProPhoto) All other processing as in colorbalance if needed, cropping, sharpening, highlites etc. => file/library management => Export to the format/size/print/webformat I like

PhotoShop
is only seldom used and only if I need to spot edit

iPhoto is never used. I also have Aperture but have a hard time getting used to it and to me it looks like C1 Pro (Capture 1) does the best RAW conversion and also works best in a tethered mode

I do real estate photography as a side business and often 'develop' several batches of 30-40 pictures so a quick, easy and automated workflow is important to me. Most of the workflow above is automated and works in batch mode.

I park my images on an external hd as source files that are not modified, then on another drive to serve as the working images. Both of these locations are included in the Time Machine backup.

I use aperture for editing, along with the nik plugins. It will do batch edits. When I finish edits and export images for the models, client, or just to share, I use iPhoto to manage them: I import the finished images into iPhoto, upload them to specific "galleries" using my MobileMe account, so that an individual can go to a password protected location to see and download images (or not be able to download, depending.)

I also use iPhoto for snapshots or other shots where I don't intend to do much editing--the basics for editing are there, and useful. The Preview application has a reasonable set of basic editing tools, too, actually. And when I can't wait to see shots, selecting the files on the drive and right-clicking to "Quick Look x items" is pretty handy.

Thank you all so much.

I'm new to Macs and I just want to work out the best way to handle my images - and to ensure that if I do want to enter voted challenges (rare) that I have untarnished images to offer site council (it's not like I'm a ribbon winner, but am still hopeful - GRIN!)
