I've been watching some photoshop videos lately and I can't figure out the keyboard shortcut to toggle between original image and the edited one I've looked on-line but cant seem to figure it out. Please help and thank you.

Do you mean reverting all steps or just one?
Undo= ctrl+alt+z redo=ctrl+shift+z ctrl+z will just undo the effect, not undo the action and continue to the one before it.
Revert to original is F12, which you can then undo to get back to your edited version.

You can also use the history palette.

Well the revert is what I'm trying to do but it is grayed out under the file menu and as long as it is greyed out the F12 key won't work. If you know some things that might disable the revert key that would be nice.

You can do it by clicking the little eye next to the background layer on and off while keeping the ALT key pressed.

It actually works for any layer; click the eyeball while depressing "alt" and all the other layers but that one are made invisible.
