In anticipation of the soon forthcoming DPL season, we have trudged through voting records in an attempt to make sure everyone is playing fair. Most of the "investigation" was done manually as to avoid "false positives," and as such was an extremely time consuming endeavor.

In the end, just around 70 users were effected. Of these, 18 showed patterns of self-correction, 30 received some degree of suspension for voting irregularities, and 20 accounts were simply closed either because they were ghost accounts or were registered merely to vote and were participating in a voting ring. Notifications of violations are being sent and should be completed by the end of the day.

Due to the nature of the site and despite the extent of the investigation, it remains possible that we "missed" some. If this is you -- meaning you consistently and regularly vote high for pictures for whom you know the photographer, you attempt to manipulate the vote for yourself or others, or if you have two or three buddies that vote for each other, we urge that you stop now to reduce the chance of site suspension or permanent banning.

To those of you that continue to vote fairly (and this would be most of you), thank you. Please continue help to keep DPChallenge a fun and fair place to play.

Thanks,
Langdon and an extremely helpful Site Council

We assume by "voting rings" you mean the Aussies and the Icelanders. :-p

No, seriously, thank you for your hard work and for striving to keep the site fair.

Thanks for the work! Even though it seems like a lot, it's really only a small fraction of the participants and this speaks to the fact that DPC has remained very much fair in it's voting. This is likely due to the vigilance of the SC.

I can't decide if I'm amazed that the SC/Admins can tell or shocked that people would actually do things like that.

Another thanks. I think that was a significant amount. Certainly enough to cause much of what was perceived.

That's true. Considering the number of voters in the last 20 challenges has ranged from only 134 to 261.

What are patterns of self-correction?

Great work to all that were involved.

ETA: Actually, I'd like to see how these decisions were made before I make mine.

As one of the aformentioned "warned" I can tell you what this means from my perspective, although I certainly do not speak for any other members other than myself.

I exchanged "10" votes with a buddy in one challenge in November.

I've logged over 3,600 votes without giving another 10 to anyone since, (but a handful of 9's for outstanding pictures)

I apologize to all for contributing, however briefly, to the loss of integrity in the voting system.

Thank you for all your work to keep this site fair and balanced.

I wonder if this will cut down on the extremely wild vote swings I have been seeing lately...or maybe it is just a sign of the times where there is now a WIDER variety of camps who vote to their tastes (and by that I mean the fine arts camp, the concept over technical camp, the technical over concept camp, the landscape camp, the language arts camp, the portrait camp, the eye candy camp, the grab-me blip vert camp, the no guts no glory camp, the 'this one goes to 11' camp, the F-Stop(s) Here Camp....etc)

But getting back to the seriousness, thank you Langdon and SC for all the work you pour into maintaining this community website.

To be clear, one challenge wouldn't be sufficient to demonstrate a pattern of abuse. There's more to it than that. Self-correction loosely means that the infraction hasn't occurred in a while, due either to a change in behavior or simple lack of participation.
